How’s your PSP section lookin’?
March 1st, 2009

One of the things we’ve talked about on the podcast a lot is the dwindling state of the PSP software section in many stores. I took a picture a couple weeks ago of a PSP section at a local Best Buy that I thought was pretty appalling. This is IT for the section. The lower shelf is all UMD movies so it’s honestly even more pathetic than it even looks at first glance. Granted, this is a smaller Best Buy than a lot of the other stores I’ve been in, but for a machine that is not (at least yet) dead, it was pretty surprising to see. What do you think, and what’s the PSP section of your local retailer lookin’ like?

I honestly don’t think that this is all that small. I mean, look at all the accessory real-estate. And it’s easy for UMD cases to get pushed around looking all disheveled because of their size. My Fry’s has a whole row dedicated to UMD movies and games, but they’re of course in dog-pile fashion. The PSP is not dead; its future just relies on its download service, which, as you said, is broken because of the prices.
From what I recall, the PSP section at my local Best Buy was half of an entire aisle long. Very healthy, in other words.
I mean mainly in terms of software. The accessories area here is twice as big as the software selection.
Well theres plenty of star ocean to go around atleast….
My local Best Buy definitely has a slightly bigger section for games, but not much bigger.
That looks about the same as the selection I run into at BestBuy. When you remove the UMD’s the number of games would probably fit on one rack.
It does look like it is a lot of accesories, but the sections I have seen have one or two big cases, a couple small cases, umd cases, one power adapter, two memory sticks and a starter pack. They usually have more accesories for Wii Fit then for PSP.
It’s pretty dismal where I live. The Best Buy has about 2 shelfs worth of games but the selection is terrible it’s only sports games, Sony first party, PS2 ports and a few RPGs that came out in the last year. The EB games is just as bare. The used games section at most EB’s is 20 or less titles. All the other systems have more variety of games.
One thing I haven’t read or heard on any Podcast is one thing Sony did right to combat piracy on the PS3 is the inclusion of the Blu-Ray drive. Craigs List has plenty of ads for I’ll Mod your PSP, Wii, 360 for $10 I haven’t seen one yet for the PS3. It’s one question I’d like to see an article or interview with Sony on.
Pretty big, actually. About twice what you have pictured there. Of course, it IS EBGames, and there’s reeally twice as much because of trades. Personally though, I have 40 PSP UMD titles, not counting doubles of Lumines and Breath of Fire III and even seven UMD movies, so it wasn’t a total bust; it has had a pretty good run so far. I have far more DS titles, but I’m actually satisfied with my PSP library as it is.
