The New (Laggy) Xbox Experience

March 8th, 2009

Maybe you’ve noticed in the past month or so that the New Xbox Experience has been hit with a case of lag. It can be pretty bad, and I’ve found that it’s most noticeable right when you power-up the system and either try to bring up your friends list (say, so you could join them for a game of Street Fighter right away) or launch one of your recently played games from your Quick Launch menu.

Tonight I decided to make a little YouTube vid of the slowness I’ve been seeing in the NXE. To preface this, I’m using the Microsoft-produced Xbox 360 wifi dongle (hooked up through the HD-DVD drive’s USB) which communicates to an Apple Time Capsule wifi router that’s hooked directly to my Comcast cable modem.

Shit, I thought that was just me. :o Terrible.

Not sure which 360 version you have but my wired Falcon is nowhere near that bad. There must be a bottleneck somewhere.

  3. March 8th, 2009 at 19:57 | #3

Yeah I dunno where the bottleneck is, but it’s pretty frustrating especially when you boot up the system specifically to get into a game with someone. And it has not always been this bad — it fluctuates. Even worse is when you’re sitting in a lobby trying to access the friends list or get out of the friends list and you’re stuck watching the list load or wait for it to exit.

My startup ain’t too bad but after that it’s all downhill.

I’ve come to the conclusion that it has to do with the amount of free hard drive space you have. Anytime I have less than 10GB free, (I have an elite) the lag seems to be much worse. Still that doesn’t stop it from happening all the time, it just seems to make it less frequent.

  6. March 8th, 2009 at 20:06 | #6

    I believe I have 43GB free on my 120.

  7. March 8th, 2009 at 20:16 | #7

@Biggie Hard drive space has nothing to do with it. Like CJ, I have somewhere in the realm of 40 GB free on a 120 GB drive. Even when I had 90 GB free this occurred. On top of that, my 360 is wired into the router. I seem to get the lag a lot when entering the Party menu to start a party or invite my friends, which is a pain in the ass when we want to get together to do some Left 4 Dead.
Sometimes I even get total freezes when turning on my system, which is even more obnoxious. The system will boot, but the Xbox 360 logo will never come up and I’ll get the joy of staring at a black screen.

I’ve been getting the startup lag too, but that’s not nearly as annoying as the menu lag while playing a game. It will completely crawl to a stop if I bring the menu up now while playing anything for a few seconds, and then a few more seconds when I try to back out of it.

I don;t know. While I agree it is slow CJ seemes to be putting it through a lot of extra hoops. I do not think his system should be used as the video representation when its running through 20 different connections.

  10. March 8th, 2009 at 20:46 | #10

    @Jeff
Which extra hoops? Wifi dongle’s connected to the USB on the HD-DVD drive but that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be hooked up to (if you have the HD drive). It did not used to be this bad with this exact same setup.

I’ve NEVEr had anything close to that bad of a lag. that is really strange to me. I only have maybe a dozen friends on my friends list (if that) and one or two games installed on my machine. In fact the new UI has been faster for me than the old blade system, and when I do want to bring the blades up it is just as fast. I’m running a 2 year old 360 with a new 120gb Hard Drive.

Have the same problem and this is on a brand new Jasper unit. With the internal memory. As CheapyD put it this new Dash is the Vista of console OS’s.

Funny even with video proof people still stick up for this crap. Hey MS how about you fix your shitty OS. Oh wait, right you’re too busy upping the prices on live arcade titles to care.

After all the gushing the media does (This podcast included) about how great the 360 is I go and buy one with a handful of games yet. It’s only now after CheapyD pointed it out that I see another site even mention how painfully slow the OS is.

My connection is wired 24Mbp download 2Mb upload.

Is it any faster on boot up if go back to the default background? Instead of using your Pac-Man theme?

So whens the new episode coming??

  15. March 8th, 2009 at 21:01 | #15

    @Dennis
ETA…about…20 minutes? Probably around there. Had problems editing a long show (2 hrs, 20 min this week).

Wow that really is bad, mine can hang when loading friends list but only for a few secs and never at any other point. I can see why you have been complaining about it! I assume you have tried clearing the cache? Why not try it wired in and see if that makes a difference?

I don’t have any lag issues with the NXE…try these things:

    1. Clear out 360 cache
    2. Connect 360 directly to your cable modem with ethernet cable

If you’re still having the problem, my condolences :)

Ummmmm…. you have 100 friends…. yes it is slow. when they updated to the shiny new coat of paint, it slowed everything down because of all the custom graphics that have to be downloaded every single time you boot up the system. I wish it cached pics more smartly, instead of having to re-download them so often.

Try booting up with a Gamertag that only has a few friends. You’ll know instantly what is slowing your system down.

@Bryan W. Good old placebo effect, I guess it’s just me looking for a rational explanation to an inconstant problem. If it is simply caused by network lag, then that is truly sad on the part of MS. We are playing for XBL there should be more server capacity than needed.

  21. March 9th, 2009 at 13:30 | #21

Cripes, CJ. I don’t have remotely the amount of lag that you have. Everything runs a bit slower than what it used to pre-NXE, but it’s still way, WAY faster than what you show.

And for the record, my setup is roughly the same as yours. The only difference is that I don’t have the HD-DVD drive and I’m bouncing my signal to a Linksys router instead of a Time Capsule.

Wow thats really bad! I have a fairly older system with ten friends and Ive never really had any lag… I guess i got lucky.

  23. March 11th, 2009 at 01:19 | #23

I’m using a 20GB Pro model connected directly to
internet wizard box and it runs at least 10X faster
    than that video! That sucks…

Makes me want to cue up this video though:

I’ve had similar issues, horrible freezes and hang ups.
Last night I took off my HDD and cleaned the plug and socket. When I put it back together, everything worked just fine.

Odd, but worth a shot. Maybe the network was better yesterday. I don’t know.

I have 6Gb left on a 120Gb drive BTW, just for comparison.

I’ve found the solution and it’s quite simple: remove any/all network connections from your 360.

Something to note is how easily updates can screw with router/gateway settings which were perfectly acceptable to Live before and in fact this has been an issue with Live updates since the Beta.

As for right now; it feels like a browser loading a webpage and it should because that’s basically what it is and that’s basically what it’s doing. It could be the supposed increased amount of data associated with the NXE or it could simply be bad network code or hammered servers.

All I know is that it’s not on your end and it’s not on my end and it has nothing to do with hardware. But if you remove your 360′s internet connection from the equation then suddenly it boots faster and acts all snappy like it should. That removes the soul from the beast mind you but if you just want to play an offline game it works wonders.

Don’t know if this will make any difference but take off auto sign-in and then boot up.

It’s strange cause I just got a 120gb drive and now my 360 is lagging constantly.
