Game Club #22 – Super Metroid

August 17th, 2010

The last Metroid is in captivity.
The galaxy is at peace…

Holy cow! We’re finally doing another Game Club!

In celebration of our 200th episode of the Player One Podcast and the upcoming release of Metroid: Other M for Wii, we are taking a look back at one of the most acclaimed titles for the Super NES, Super Metroid.

Despite all of the praise that Super Metroid has gotten over the years, the game is over 15 years old now. Does it still hold up after all this time?* Let’s find out by playing it together! Bust out your old cartridge or pick up the game for 800 Nintendo Points from the Wii’s Virtual Console.

We’ll be discussing Super Metroid on episode 201 of the Player One Podcast, so get playing and share your comments and/or memories. You can post them in the comments section of this blog post, in the official thread on our forums, drop us an email, or leave a voicemail (713-893-8069).

* Don’t be a fool. Of course it holds up! Still, maybe you have…odd…taste in games and you’re not a fan of Super Metroid. In that case, we really wanna hear from you.

Game Club #20 – Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker

July 6th, 2009

Moonwalker_Box
On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson’s death caused this fairly common Genesis game to skyrocket in value. A game that could previously be found for a couple bucks was now selling for hundreds of dollars. Even so, it was pretty clear that this would have to be our next Game Club title.

Moonwalker 01 Moonwalker 02

As of now, Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker is only available on the Sega Genesis, Master System, or Game Gear. For our Game Club, we will be talking about the Genesis version, but if you want to comment on the other ports, please do. If you don’t have access to the Genesis cartridge, we’re sure that you will find some way to play it.

The game will be discussed in episode #142, so get playing and leave us your comments and memories of the game. As always, you can post them on this blog, in the forums, drop us an email, or leave a voicemail (713-893-8069).

Game Club #19 – Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

May 30th, 2009

sly_japanesebox
It looks like CJ never got around to whipping up a proper Sly Cooper Game Club blog post, so I’m gonna take care of it. :P

First a quick announcement: This Game Club was originally scheduled for episode #136, but we have pushed it back until episode #138. We rambled a little long when we recorded #136, and we didn’t want to do a half-hearted Game Club discussion by cramming our Sly Cooper discussion in afterward. So what does this mean for you? Well, if you’ve not done so already, there’s still time to get some playtime in and leave us your comments!

sly_stealth

With the recent release of Sucker Punch’s Infamous, we wanted to turn back the clock and revisit one of the developer’s earlier titles, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus for PS2. This was the company’s second game, and its first one developed for a Sony system (its first was Rocket: Robot on Wheels for N64).

Can this (slightly) older game stand up to today’s best platformers? Give it a try and let us know! You should be able to find used copies of the game at just about any GameStop for the low, low price of $5.

Be sure to leave us your comments here, in our Game Club forum, via e-mail, or on our voicemail line (713-893-8069).

Game Club #18 – Ys: Book I & II

March 28th, 2009

ys_box
Ys, the ideal utopia. Once a country so peaceful and prosperous, a country where children were as free as the wind. A country where harmony blew through the hearts of all men.

Ys, a kingdom ruled by the wisdom and charity of its six powerful priests. An empire watched over and blessed by the enchanting aura of its two beautiful goddesses.

Ys, the seemingly tranquil paradise, suddenly pulled from the height of its civilization to the empty abyss of infinite isolation.

How could such a land of promise simply vanish from the face of the planet? How could such prosperity be forgotten?

The legend has been silenced for over seven hundred years. And now the mystery unfolds.

ys_titlescreen
After our Beyond Oasis Game Club, we’ve decided to keep the action-RPG train going with Ys: Book I & II (for the record, it’s pronounced “ease,” not “whys”). This was one of the very first console games to be released on CD in the U.S. back when it came out for the TurboGrafx-16. The series has earned a lot of fans over the years, but will newcomers to the series enjoy the simplistic “run into enemies to damage them” combat system? That’s what we wanna find out.

Since most of you probably don’t have a TurboGrafx to play the original on, your best best is to get the game through the Wii’s Virtual Console (only 800 Wii Points, and you can now play it straight off an SD card!). Atlus also recently released a graphically updated version of the game(s) for the Nintendo DS under the title Legacy of Ys: Book I & II. You won’t get the true old school Ys experience playing this version, but if that’s all you got, then go for it.

We’ll be discussing this game in episode 131. In the meantime, get playing and get us your comments and/or memories. As always, you can post them on this blog, in the forums, drop us an email, or leave a voicemail (713-893-8069).
