Remember when you could get like five free games when you bought a TurboExpress?
    Man, that rocked.

Or, they were rushing a product out the door.
However, I think that the online versions of every AM2 game had online added later or were developed outside of Japan.

Well, except F355...I bet Peter Moore twisted some arms to get that done properly.

Well, you'll always live your life with the knowledge that you were the only host saying stupid enough things to get ignored in the first place.
    Merry Christmas!

I don't know about every Japanese developer getting it or not getting it, but SEGA definitely gets it, and has gotten for a long time. Without SEGA's online on the Saturn and Dreamcast, I don't think anyone would have had the balls to actually integrate online into their platform.

It also seems like, generally speaking, the companies that have elected to get close to Microsoft all the sudden get religion on online though. Capcom for one. Thank god for that.

    Haven't played either of them.
I wonder if Kingdom Hearts outsold God of War?

Worldwide I'd say it's a certainty, but I'm specifically thinking about North America here.

What follows is a more or less complete list of Xbox 360 titles released from January 1, 2007 through June 30, 2007:

    Armored Core 4
    Battlestations: Midway
    Blitz: The League
    Bullet Witch
    Call of Juarez
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
    Dance Dance Revolution Universe
    Def Jam: Icon
    Earth Defense Force 2017
Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer
    Forza Motorsport 2
    Fuzion Frenzy 2
    Guitar Hero 2
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
    Hour of Victory
    Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
    MLB 2K7
    Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia
    NBA Street Homecourt
    NCAA March Madness 07
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
    Rayman Raving Rabbids
    Samurai Warriors 2: Empires
    Shrek the Third
    Spider Man 3
    Surf's Up
    Tenchu Z
    The Bigs
    The Darkness
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
    Transformers the Game
    UEFA Champions League 2006-2007
    Virtua Tennis 3
Walt Disney Presents Meet the Robinsons
    Wartech (Senko no Ronde)
Winning Eleven Pro Evolution Soccer 2007

You've got a mix of passable to very good sports games (which are just never going to stand out for any reason in your best of the year lists), awful to solid movie games (the ones aimed at kids generally at least play well), a couple PC ports, a few mediocre Japanese titles, some up ports from last gen consoles (like Rayman Raving Rabbids), then you have a few games that were great, but overpriced so no one bought them (Senko no Ronde, Shadowrun). You're left with Crackdown, GRAW2, Dirt, Forza 2 and Lost Planet.

The Darkness and Overlord haven't been out long enough for it to sink in what they are.

I'm a little bit surprised that GRAW2 hasn't been mentioned here. I think Dirt got buried by Forza 2, and Lost Planet came out in January, so I guess people just forgot that one. Meanwhile, here's the PS3 release list:

    Armored Core 4
    The Bigs
    College Hoops 2k7
The Darkness (did this even come out?)
    Def Jam: Icon
    Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
    Enchanted Arms
    Formula One
    The Godfather
    MLB 2k7
    MLB 07: The Show
    NBA Street Homecourt
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
    Sonic the Hedgehog
    Spiderman 3
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas (did this come out yet?)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent
    Virtua Fighter 5
    Virtua Tennis 3

Notice anything familiar about this list? I'm seeing 3 games on it that haven't already come out on 360. One is an F1 game, which apparently was good, but it's F1. VF5 was probably great, but no one bought it. Motorstorm was the greatest game that didn't arrive at launch, and people played the shit out of the demo. So...yeah, problems picking a game of the year so far.

The rest of this year is going to be a lot better than the start of the year for sure though.

No, but I do think they are aware of what their competition is up to, and probably not terribly enthused about the sales of the title on PS3.
Since Tecmo and Namco were both online or going online (and don't think for a moment that SEGA hasn't known for months that Namco was going online with their games), SEGA had to step up, otherwise it was going to be a long console generation for them.

I think that the thought that they might launch on 360 to the same sort of tepid reception might have contributed to their decision to add something, anything to make it a better value proposition on the 360. Whether that was going to be an RPG mode or online...something was coming.

Online was very probably the EASIEST thing they could do, since the arcade version was designed as an online game. I'd be more likely to believe that, like everyone else, they were just having problems getting the PS3 version out the door, and the online either ended up on the cutting room floor or it was something that they weren't receiving enough information to adequately implement.

I wouldn't be surprised if VF5 for 360 comes under a funny name as well. Sony may have moneyhatted an exclusive to VF5, but once they add a USP and maybe update it as VF5:VSBout or something...suddenly they have a new product.

I agree with giving Crackdown an 8. I enjoyed it a lot, but for the time being, it doesn't have as much draw for me as other games that I'm kind of obsessed with.
What's interesting is that IMHO, Just Cause is probably about an eight as well, but I'm sure that it rated far lower than that. (just checked, 72 on gamerankings for 360, 73 on Xbox, far lower than that on other platforms, including PS3)

It's just an eight for entirely different reasons. The graphics on the ground are pretty awful, the driving model is similarly bad, there are a lot of similar scenarios where you'll walk into an area and just get your ass blown up by repeated rockets to the face, but there's zero character progression in Just Cause, flying vehicles (flying and parachuting is one of the best looking parts of the game), an actual determined storyline and organized system for side missions, with non-character based rewards for completing side missions. No coop, no online, but the world is huge.

I liked Crackdown, but I'm addicted to Just Cause.

However, the question was game of the year so far, and there haven't been all that many releases of AAA calibre.

I was going to pass on VF5, and just buy the stick when it came out, if it was any good, but I'll probably pick it up eventually now.

There's a pretty substantial difference there though, SNK was never attempting to compete in the home video game market. The home console was just an adjunct to their enormously successful arcade business. It was more a gesture to their hardcore fans than anything else.

The home console was cheaper than the arcade unit, the games were less expensive, and you had the luxury of just hooking it up to your TV instead of finding a place to put an arcade cab. It was for every guy who couldn't quite get the kitchen pass to put an arcade in the garage.

I think that if Sony intended to announce a price cut, they wouldn't deny it, they would more likely go with their standard practice of telling mainstream media and embargoing the information, then threatening the indies.

It might be telling that 1up's article [ http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160820 ] doesn't talk about a denial at all, though. Just a non-denial. Personally, that lends it some credibility IMHO, for exactly the reasons that I've just cited, even though I was pretty skeptical earlier.

I think that article that SaitoH linked to is useless. They have a "quote" in their leid, but it's entirely uncited. No "we spoke with" or "so and so reported."

Complaining about the driving physics in Crackdown is, IMHO, a lot like whining that there's no jump button in Pac-Man.

Well, isn't that the general consensus on Twilight Princess as well? Maybe we've just seen that game too many times already.

Stick to people with several thousand stars. They're actual retailers of one stripe or another, and you can typically get your demands met if there's a problem.

I've had great success with ebay.

You can usually even get new factory shrinkwrapped titles for 40 bucks instead of the normal retail 60.

A one week doorbuster isn't a price cut announcement now any more than it was when it happened in the UK.
