TONS OF INFO!

How to join! How Scoring Works! FAQ! Game Tips!

So for those that don't know here is how it works (including tweaks from season 1 to season 2).

1. There are 10 tournaments in a season. Each week has a tournament on Tues/Wed and on Fri/Sat/Sun. So, obviously, a season is 5 weeks long.

2. You win points based on your standings in each tournament. Think of it like mario kart, where the winner gets 10 points, 2nd gets 8, 3rd gets 6, etc. We will be working with different point values than that, but that's the basic idea (actual scoring table below). In season one it was only the top 7 that got points in a tournament, in season two we are expanding that. This season it will be the top 15.

3. There are two "MAJOR MAJOR" tournaments in a season... tournament #5 and tournament #10. They are worth double points.

4. The person with the most points at the end of the season is the season champ. The season champ will get a $20 prize in the form of a PSN/XBLA/Steamgift from P1P's own Mike "mik" Phillips.

All are welcomed here. Doesn't matter if you don't know anyone, if you never listened to the podcast, you're a member's cousin's friend's girlfriend, you hate me but love golf... whatever. All are welcome. To join follow the steps in the FAQ directly below this.

And P1P hosts (or people recruiting friends) make sure when you tell people that "you just have to be on famousmortimer's friend's list to be entered" that you add the information "but make sure to send him a note on PSN/forums/wherever telling him who you are because if he gets a friend request from someone with zero explanation he assumes it's an idiot from Near and deletes it."

Tournament FAQ!

I'm new here/haven't posted here in a while/just got a vita/etc AND I WANT TO JOIN! WHAT DO I DO?

It's easy, really. All you have to do is get on my friends list. My PSN is famousmortimer. My list keeps filling and but I try to keep purging so people can atleast get friends requests through.

Of utmost importance is that you tell me that you are from P1P!!! I'm getting a ton of friend requests, maybe from near, maybe from neogaf, maybe from having a bigtime internet podcast. Ok probably not for the last reason. So if I get a friend request with no other info I decline it if I don't recognize the name. Obviously, if Phil gets a vita and sends me a request I'll know who he is... but if CAPTNRXTHERMOMETER sends me a friend request with no other info I will probably reject it. Also, take note, you can't type a message when sending a friend request on the vita! So if you add me via your vita you will need to send another message (via group messaging) saying who you are.

Get it? Good.

Once you are on my list all you have to do is play. You will then be on my friends results page and I will automatically post your scores on these tournaments.

I missed the first day of the tournament, can I still enter?

No. Sorry. I was thinking of giving people an opportunity to come in late by giving them +1 or +2 over the highest score, but really these tournaments happen so often that I don't see a good reason to add more work for myself.

I would like to help!

Thanks! But currently Kurichan and I have it under control, but if we start to struggle we will reach out for more people.

I don't think its fair that some people have more powerful characters/clubs/etc

I agree but we have no plans to make special rules this season.

Are you going to do this with any other games?

Yeah, probably. I am absolutely in love with the concept of asynchronous multiplayer. I think the vita offers a unique combo of smart phone features (the ability to snap screenshots and post them) with console quality games. So putting stuff like this together is fairly easy. The older and more complex my life gets the harder it becomes to play multiplayer games. When I was younger it was all on one screen. Then it was in one game over the internet. Now it's easiest to do it with things like this where you can play at your own pace. And I feel that adding custom tournaments like this adds a bit to it. I mean, we could all just look at our friends results each day... and that's cool. But having these tournaments, and this thread, for whatever reason it seems to up the ante even further. It works perfectly in a game like golf as well because you live and die with each stroke. It's intense and I really love that.

So going forward I'll be looking for other games that can achieve the same sort of results without adding more work on my end or the player's end. Unit 13 is interesting to me as I know they plan on having daily missions, but I do worry that you can play it multiple times and one thing I want to avoid is rewarding the person who has the most time to just play and play and play until he gets a score high enough (even though that person would likely be me since i'm a crackhead). But I do plan on looking into that. Maybe something with time trials in Motorstorm RC. I dunno, we'll see as each game comes out. What I don't want to do, however, is pull attention away from this. I don't think it would be good for the long term viability of these events if we just hopped from game to game to game and people felt overwhelmed spending money and then it only lasts two weeks, etc. My main focus is making sure this lasts as long as I can possibly make it last. And if i can do stuff on top of it, without hurting it, I will.

Update: Would love to do a co-op Unit 13 tournament. And a Hustle Kings tournament. Keep tuned into this forum if these interest you.

I write with a lot of unintended sexual innuendo.

HSG TIPS!

Via Juanster: There are two different types of spin.

Regular: Just hold the d-pad in the direction of the spin. It doesn't matter when you begin the button press, just as long as you are pressing it while you hit the ball.

Super Spin: While the power meter is building up, press the opposite direction of the spin you want. Keep holding this direction until and during you set the power. When the meter is coming back, press the actual direction of the spin you want. Again, it doesn't matter when you begin these button presses, just as you are holding them while you hit X.

Note: You will only get actual ball-rolling-backwards-after-landing backspin with superspin and perfect impact.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via famousmortimer: Watch the angle of the ground when you are hitting. In the bottom right there are little meters that look like the air bubbles in a Level. If you are sitting on a hill that dips to the right the ball will then fly to the right when you strike it. So you will need to compensate by aiming to the left of where you actually want it to go. Sometimes it's best to layup a bit shorter to land on flat ground than to have to make a shot off of a hill like that.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via Kurichan: Just go around the house/windmill/building/etc, you'll thank him later.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via famousmortimer: You can skip it off the water if you have giant brass balls. It works best with woods and with low shots (top spin).

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via famousmortimer: Watch the rules! Power Shot +2 means that every single time you use a powershot in that tournament you get a two stroke penalty! Big cup is, obviously, a big cup. Impossible cup means that each pin location is at the absolute most difficult spot on the green. There are also other ones that are self explanatory (gale force wind, rainy, etc).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via Juanster: Using triangle and circle to hit the ball: Triangle ups the power by about 2% and circle lowers the power by about 2%. These are helpful to adjust power on the fly.

Keep in mind that these shots require a certain loyalty level. Keep an eye out for when you have unlocked them.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via famousmortimer Likewise you can add power to a shot by doing a quick flick/waggle of the vita itself as you make contact with the ball, but this seems like a recipe for throwing your vita on the floor.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Via google/youtube

Rising Shot: A super top spin shot.

Homing Shot: A super backspin shot.

Super spiral: A super sidespin shot.

These need to be super spin (see the first tip) and they need to go in if you are trophy hunting.

_________________________________________

Season two scoring rules.

The top 15 will be getting points this season (up from the top 7 in season 1).

Points will be doled out as follows:

Left = place, right = points given

1 - 13

2 - 11

3 - 10

4 - 9

5 - 8

6 - 7

7 - 6

8 - 5

9 - 4

10- 3

11- 2.5

12- 2

13- 1.5

14- 1

15-.5

So as you see 1-10 get a solid number, 11-15 start getting smaller integers. But the good news is that going by attendance/scores of season one that this should mean that just about everyone that enters a tournament should come out of it with points.

The majors are remaining double points. In season 1 the majors were fun and got people nice boosts in the standings without ruining the competitive balance of the whole thing. We decided to keep it double for season 2 (despite hinting otherwise).

If at the end of a tournament or the season there are two or more people tied for 1st place there will be a 1 day playoff (and continue to have 1 day playoffs until we have a winner).

If at the end of the season there are two or more Playerone Podcast hosts tied in the standings there will be a 1 day playoff (and continue to have 1 day playoffs until we have a winner) as bragging rights on the podcast are of utmost importance :D

If you want to know why we did what we did, read on. If you don't care, this can be the end of the post :)

If you are wondering why we are doing it like this (with fractions) the answer is that we were concerned about the leaders getting too far ahead. In season 1 if after two tournaments you came in 1st in both you had 20 points. If you came in 15th in both you had 0 points. So there was a 20 point margin there. We worked on some models where 1st got 20, 2nd got 18, 3rd 16, etc down to 15 getting 1. Under this model after two rounds it would be 40-2, which even though the person has two points it's just far to big of a margin. So working in fractions we were able to get more people on the board without making the margin between first and last too huge. With our season two scoring it will be 24 to 1.... which is bigger than season 1, but not by a lot, and it gets way more people points.

The reason that majors are staying double points is so we don't get crazy fractions. Kurichan and I are both worried that double points can throw off the competitive balance of the league if someone was to sweep it, but at the same time, that's why golf has majors - they are bigger, more intense, more important. But really the major thing was that we didn't want people coming out of them with like 14.25 points or weird shit like that. We are trying to keep it at half points at worst.

Any questions or comments on scoring are welcomed.

Addional rules on tiebreakers and whatnot:

And just some weird rules type stuff I want to get out now just in case we run into problems later...

The schedule I did double check but if the tournament number does not jive with what everyone else is seeing please default to playing the FIRST NINE HOLE daily on the day posted (either tues/wed or fri/sat/sun).

There will likely be a patch dropped in the middle of this season and we don't know what affect it will have on everything. If it enables us to create our own tournaments and it drops before tournament #5, I will make a custom schedule for the second half of the season. If it drops after tournament #5 we will finish the season doing the first 9H (if that's still available). If it changes absolutely everything as we know we may have to delay the season for a few days while Kurichan and I figure out what stuff they added/subtracted and what makes the most sense to finish the season correctly. Most likely though Season 3 is where you will see us using any extra features they add. I'd like to keep season 2 consistent start to finish if possible.

HSG score (the points, not your golf score) don't matter in a tournament. If there is a tie for first place the points don't matter. Whoever is tied for first will play the following day (which is always an off day) and then, and only then, if they are tied again will the points determine the winner. If the points are tied on that day the following day they will play the SECOND 9h (since we will be doing the first for the next tournament) as the next tiebreaker. And on and on and on until there is a winner.

At the end of the season if there is a tie in points for first place there will be a tie break just like the scenario listed above. This also applies to if there is a tie in points between any P1P hosts as bragging rights on the show (and them talking about this tournament on the show in general) is a good thing

Thanks! :)

I'm glad I've kept it going also. It's been easy to do, because interest has been so high and the feedback so strong. Getting 20+ people entering tournaments has been awesome. And honestly I would probably barely touch this game by now (almost finished the single player) but with this thing it's still my favorite vita game. So thanks to all the people who have kept it fun :D

A big thanks to mort for organising the tourney and Mik for offering a little bit of gold from his stash.

Mind you I am still waiting on my Vita background trophy from mort! What? Are you too good to draw me a picture? (Also did all those penis drawings I drew in drawsomething make you delete our game? )

Great job and I can't wait to compete every week in Season 2. I apologize for being a no show for half of Season 1.

I do have a couple of suggestions:

1. Like real majors, the "Major Majors" should be three-day tournaments that happen over the weekend. I'm not a big fan of having the final tourney of the year on a mid-week, 2-day tourney. It's kind of anticlimactic.

2. I think you should give a little bit of a bump for winning (or being in the top three) since it's really hard to do consistently since even the best of us completely blow a hole every round or two. I would suggest keeping everything the same but bumping 1st/2nd/3rd up to 15/13/11. Or even 15/12/10. 1st place in ANYTHING should get an extra level of bonus. That's just how I feel.

3. I request a picture of mort licking his PSV Chobot-style as an additional reward for the Season 2 victor.

I do have a couple of suggestions:

Firstly, that's three suggestions! I would have used the word "few", not "couple".

Eigththly, I agree, will see how mort feels about it.

EDIT: Mort explained me some shits, and he is right and the god of Hot Shots P1P tourneys.

But seriously, I think mort has his finger on the pulse, and we have a nice setup as is.

I will just copy and paste my response to kurichan in private... as i think it explains my thinking pretty well. I am open to criticism of it, of course.

Well I agree and I don't agree.

First off, 3 day tournaments for the majors is fine. I was contemplating that already. Though I do like the idea of one being 2 day and one being 3 day as both tournament types have a different feel so it's nice to capture both in a major setting. But i'm not stuck on this, i can go 3 day for both without losing any sleep. Though I believe the setup makes the first major a 2 day and the final a 3 day. Which is perfect to me. But like I said I can be swayed on this.

In most competitive setups I completely agree with the top players getting more points but my approach to this thing from the very beginning is to focus on the bottom, not the top. Because in reality we have about 6 people who are going to compete for the top and about 15-25 that aren't. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few if i'm allowed to completely nerd this motherfucker up.

I want people to feel like they have a shot, whether the reality is true or not. The further the people at the bottom get away from the people at the top the more likely they are to just pack it in and give up. I've done everything since day one trying to avoid that. That's why I setup ties the way I did (with multiple people tying for 2nd, 3rd, etc... to get more involved). I don't want to start undoing that now.

Maybe by season 3 if we are weened down to a lower number of players, mostly hardcore, we can do a more hardcore setup that is geared to the competitive.

I do understand why matt wants that, and why you want that... and heck, even I think that makes more sense. But that's because we all place high. I'm trying to come at this from the perspective of those that don't. Ya know? Does this make any sense?

Just a quick thought, mainly for Kurichan who has been doing the season standings, putting a number in paranthesis next to the number one in standings for how many weeks they hold the top spot for the season.

Just an idea for season 2, not sure if anyone really cares, but would make it feel a little more like real golf. We may have our own Hot Shots Tiger Woods.

Otherwise thanks for keeping the tourneys going, lots of fun and one of the main reasons I love my vita, besides it being an awesome piece of machinery.

Ahem, I believe this comment was not addressed:

3. I request a picture of mort licking his PSV Chobot-style as an additional reward for the Season 2 victor.

Famousmortimer: I've tried to send you a friend request a couple of times, but it just says your friendlist is full. If/when there is a spot available, please let me know.
