This week there's no one overarching segment. Instead, we talk about a few little things, starting with the top 10 entries in Next-Gen.biz's list of the Top 100 games people played in 2006 (though the list does not include three very important entries, at least in Phil's mind). We also discuss retailer Gamestop's new program where their Aeris automated call system dials you up to ask if you want to trade in a game you bought two months ago. And we thought Aeris was six feet under. We go off on a few other tangents as well, including talking about Microsoft's comments to 1UP that Viva Pinata on DS "just makes sense" and this week's mini-avalanche of new titles for each next-gen console. It's like November in February.

But as always we start the show by talking about the games we've played in the last week. And we end it by going over some of the feedback and questions we've received in the last seven days.

Keep leaving us comments (via e-mail, comments on our web site, the forum thread for this episode, iTunes, Digg us, Skype us at playeronepodcast) or leave us a voice mail by calling 713-893-8069, long distance charges apply. Thanks for listening, tell your friends, and we'll be back next week!

Hey Guys! After listening to this weeks show, I liked your discussion on the top 100 games the most. It's interesting and shocking to see what general consumers take home to play. The fact that cars was number 2 still has me shocked.

Also wanted to point out that the feedback between the podcast and this forum is important as well. Its good to know you guys are listening.

It was cool you talked about the Game Night, I had alot of fun with that. Maybe some of the other hosts can get in on it sometime.

Also, if Viva Pinata came out for the Nintendo DS, I'd buy a DS just to play it. I'm not much of a handheld gamer at all, but I don't think I could resist.

Really enjoyed the feedback segment this time--as it reminded me of the long-lost FMV games I used to think were so cool. I must have spent hundreds of hours with just Road Avenger and Cobra Command.

I actually kind of miss those games. In fact, the Sega CD may be one of my serious gaming guilty pleasures.

This was a weird episode to record. Since we were all busy last week it just kind of meandered. I think after we recorded it we all wondered if it was gonna turn out that well. I'm mixed. I like the conversational "let's just go into the next topic" sort of tone, but it does feel like we were struggling at several points. I think we need a "main topic," which we didn't have this time. Though I like the "about an hour" length. That's just me, though.

I know at least Phil's gonna like the stinger at the end of the episode, because I think he's been doing that schtick since episode 9 or 10 and I hadn't turned it into anything until this week.

good show! short but thats good since you werent really on seperate tangents...

the gamestop segment was hilarious! and in my opinion, gamestop and eb games are the last places that i go to for videogames...
my favorite would have to be Best Buy(plug warning) good sales, good supply, and great sales people..(i actually became friends with one guy while i was in line for the PS3!)

I'm tellin' ya...we need to do an entire episode like that. It'll be gold!

Every employee at every Best Buy that I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot) have been morons. A few years back, I was looking for component cables, and an employee in the videogame department told me to go check in the refridgerator section. The refridgerator section! They do have decent prices and supply, though. Personally, though, I much prefer Fry's for buying videogames. They typically have a much better supply and far better sales. Most new games are about $10 cheaper at Fry's for the first week of their release than they are at Best Buy. Of course, the sales people there can be pretty dumb, too, but they tend to leave you alone most of the time.

Fry's = Outpost.com

Best Buy is a waste of time to me. Their selection is utter crap. If you're looking for a niche title, or anything that's not already a platinum hit...ugh. And the prices are no better than anywhere else.

Oh my god, no. It took me long enough to put together that little bit (Garageband crashed on me twice while I was laying in and trying out all the sound effects). A whole episode like that would be murder.

They do have decent prices and supply, though. Personally, though, I much prefer Fry's for buying videogames. They typically have a much better supply and far better sales. Most new games are about $10 cheaper at Fry's for the first week of their release than they are at Best Buy.

Once you buy an HDTV, or have an HD movie player, you will stop thinking their prices are so good. Currently, they're usually at least $10 more expensive on any high-def discs (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) than Amazon. And I would not suggest shopping for cables at Best Buy *ever*, unless you're buying Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo brand. Anything with their house brand is extremely expensive compared to the prices you'd pay for the same cable on the Internet. Like, $99 for a $15 HDMI cable.

My favorite part of the episode was the discussion of Crackdown. I'm so excited about this game and every bit of discussion I hear about it makes me start to drool! I also really liked the discussion of the EBGames/Gamestop policy of calling to see if you want to sell games back - I've never purchased anything at one of these stores and we just got one here in town - but that definitely makes me want to stay away. I prefer our GameCrazy anyways.

Thinking about the title of this episode - I just figured out that it could be interpreted in two ways. At first I just thought it was about the phone call from another passionate listener I assume is already here on the boards - but now I see it is also a reference to the EBGames call too! I'm a little slow on the uptake I guess.

Ain't that the truth. I've only bought two HD-DVDs there and they were more of impulse buys than anything else, and not because of their "low prices". The only place I'd currently consider worse than Best Buy would be Circuit City, because every time I've walked into those stores, I've felt like the salespeople were actively avoiding me altogether.

Oh, and great show again guys. Maybe you don't consider it one of your strongest efforts, but what, with all the new forums and stuff, it's all good. And yes, I'm down for another game night!

When it comes to EB Games, I used to spend alot of time there two summers ago when I was rebuilding my old NES collection. All of the county stores would send their old video games there so they had quite an impressive collection. EB Games then changed policy and stopped taking trades on SNES and NES games but they still sold N64 and PSX games. I decided to go to Gamecrazy for my old games but continued going to EB for new and used PS2 games. Now that Gamestop bought them their prices on used games has gone up, they stopped selling N64 and PSX games and I get less money for my trades. I will go their if I must but I would rather go to the local mom and pop store "Game ADX" where I found brand new SNES controllers and a boxed perfect condition copy of Super Castlevania IV.

Tagline could be: "Metal Gear GEAR"

First of all: great show guys ! Together with 1up yours, your podcast keeps me entertained during those long walks to school.

I loved the answers to the 'first good than bad and other way around' question. I've also experienced such games that blow you away at first, but end up rather crappy. I was really stoked on twilight princess for the first 25 hours, but those last dungeons were pretty tideous, leaving me with a bad aftertaste.
I didn't like playing Viva Pinata at first, because I tried to get all pinatas in my garden, after adapting my strategy I really discovered the depth that game has to over.

Last podcast was also great. I follow translation studies and found the use of translation and related problems in videogames a very interesting topic. Nice one

ps: could you change my tag into: Desperate Houseman

Great show guys. I've been listening since day one (gotta catch 'em all!) I really liked the Aeris section. I always enjoy the used game debate. While I agree the stores are often engaged in sleazy practices (and this new one takes the cake!), if you've got a game jones like mine and not enough cabbage, used games are really a help.

By the way, your Gang of Four works great -- interesting people with good chemistry. I'm looking forward to the next episode with baited breath...

Could my tag be "The Lucster" ?
