With the current Activision/Vivendi merger shenanigans, there has been talk that Sierra may be retired as a brand. Now, they've been nowhere close to relevant for a long time, but back in the day Sierra was something. I've seen the nostalgia blooming a little bit on the net because of this recently, and I've had a little of my own.

I started life as a PC gamer. I didn't have a NES until after I had a SNES. I'm not much of one anymore, but that's more because PC has developed mostly in niches I'm not interested in. Back in the day we had all kinds of genres. I played my first RPGs, shmups, and platformers on PC. And then of course, there was the classic adventure game.

I know everyone is like "lol PC" but I really really think it would be cool to look back at some of these ancient times. And with Sierra possibly gone forever (no matter what happens to the brand) I think a look back at King's Quest is warranted. If nothing else the game's ridiculous unfairness is a discussion point, and we have FAQs now.

The King's Quest Collection is only $10 on Amazon, and the game is available on GameTap.

I support this. I love me some classic Sierra adventure games.

Fact: Shane Bettenhausen has some sort of twisted crush on King's Quest creator Roberta Williams. He was absolutely shattered when I informed him that one of the women in the hot tub on the cover of SoftPorn is Roberta.

Mangod threatened to punch Chris Kohler in the face on an episode of Retronauts for dogging on Phantasmagoria. It's even more hilarious because he sounds like he actually means it.

He's serious about that? Wow. THE PLOT THICKENS.

I love me some King's Quest - played and completed every game in the series. I'd love it if you did a game club on one of them.

If it weren't for my hatred of the King's Quest games way back when, I probably would never have tried all of LucasArt's awesome adventure games.
I remember reading Monkey Island's manual where it specifically pointed out that they don't believe in killing or punishing the player for exploring. Death always seemed to come arbitrarily in Sierra adventures. Willy Beamish was probably the worst.

BUT YEAH. KING'S QUEST IS AWESOME.

Oh my god, I had Willy Beamish on Sega CD. That game would fucking kill you for something like eating a slice of pizza.

No, if it was made by Sierra the game would never have been kind enough to kill you instantly when you ate the pizza. You'd discover eight hours later that the pizza was an integral piece of some obscure puzzle and that eating the pizza too early would make the game unbeatable.

Let's stop talking about crappy Sierra games and talk about awesome stuff, like potentially doing a Fallout Game Club when Good Old Games launches next month. That would be rad!

Or maybe MDK! That would give me a reason to play it aside from the fact that MDK2 is one of my favorite games so it's kind of weird that I've never played the first one!

I'm totally down for a Fallout, or a Half Life, or an MDK, but old adventure games where you have to put the cigarettes in the keyhole to get the dog to bark, but you can't because you didn't pick up the cigarettes in chapter 2, are even less fun than Alex Kidd.

It's not an adventure game in the classical sense, but I really really hope at some point they do Out of This World. That game is really a forgotten gem.

Never been a big fan of the classic adventure games, I couldn't even play the kings quest games untill about VI because I was too young to read. The only PC games my family had were the "fatty bear" and "putt putt" games my little brother and sister loved, I was "stuck" with my NES till the mid 90's and there is no way you could convince the 10 year old me to play anything but Command and Conquer.

Well I've never seen complaints about the difficulty on boards like The NeoGAF, so I guess those problems are unique to me alone and I suck at video games.

Now that the X-Com games are out on Steam for ($5 each, $14 for all 5) and all but Terror from the Deep run on Vista, it might be interesting to see new people try at least the first one.

Non US people may know them as the UFO series. They are a mix of RTS and TBS. The first one is great, the second is basically the first one, but harder and right now vista incompatable, but they're working on it. Appocalypse goes a bit more RTS, but is still fun, the others... The package is still a nice deal.

Anyone played the new Quest for Glory II VGA redo? I played about an hour of it and it's good. That could be a candidate for the GameClub and it's free.

The problem with doing a PC game for game club now is that the two remaining hosts own Macs. :) (Although I did just start playing WoW -- trying the 14-day trial.)

As a mac person, I'd recommend doing Cave Story for a game club sometime, since mac and PC users can both download it free. It would also be relevant with the recent WiiWare port announcement. And it's not too long, so you can see most of the game.
