I was looking for something to listen to at work and saw an old episode of EGM Live (3/26/2007) with special guest: internet superstar Christ Johnston. Reminiscing about past EGM April fools jokes, it is mentioned that CJ is responsible for coming up with the 2002 Sonic/Tales in SSBM gag.
My friends and I were huge melee fans and spent a painful amount of time trying to beat those motherfuckers on cruel melee. Eventually we gave up and cried about it for months. I was ready to give up on life, drop out of school, and spent the rest of my days turning tricks to fuel my newfound heroine addiction.
Thankfully, just before I sold my gamecube to the local pawn shop, logic kicked in. If Sonic and Tales occupied the bottom left and right corners of the character select screen, there would be no way to do random-select anymore. After combining this with the April-ness of the issue, we came to the conclusion that whoever wrote this story was an asshole.
Apparantly that was you, CJ. You are an asshole.

You people obviously didn't learn your lesson with the Simon Belmont/TMNT2 gag. My brother and I actually fell for that one. I remember the code being like some bastard mutant of the Konami code that was so long that it was impossible to input before the title screen disappeared.
