Perler beads [56K warning?]

had to make mario for my first one, a quarter is traditional for scale but since we're all hardcore gamers a DS is used instead:

I thought getting a mixed bag of 7500 was a good idea for variety in colour, turns out the mini beads are smaller than I thought and sorting them takes ages, easy to reach a zen like state while trying to sort some of them though, I did get quite a few seperate bags though so when I start my bigger projects the sorting won't be a problem, this mixed pack is a bit of a lost cause though unless I use it for a few more small projects, also pictured are the near usless tweezers and my trusty bead placer, the straigtened paper clip

yeah! my order came today, my first creation took a hell of a lot longer than I thought, these mini beads are hard to work with, though I discovered that threading them through a straightened paper clip and pushing them off one by one, works a charm. During the discovery process though I was pretty focused on putting my Mario together, while listening to my ipod (P1P of course) my brother smacked me on the shoulder, I turned around in suprise, dropping my hand onto the board as I did, causing the unironed Mario's head to go catapulting across the room and leaving me at square one.

When I first bought some beads, I got one of those large buckets, too. I ended up going insane trying to sort them for the proper colors and ended up just ordering single color bags of them.I thought getting a mixed bag of 7500 was a good idea for variety in colour, turns out the mini beads are smaller than I thought and sorting them takes ages, easy to reach a zen like state while trying to sort some of them though, I did get quite a few seperate bags though so when I start my bigger projects the sorting won't be a problem, this mixed pack is a bit of a lost cause though unless I use it for a few more small projects, also pictured are the near usless tweezers and my trusty bead placer, the straigtened paper clip

I should also show off these couple new things that I made. I put together this Dr. Wily, E-Tank, and Yashichi a while ago.

My recent play-through of Starfy inspired me to whip this sprite up after returning from my recent trip.

His hats made the front page of Sprite Stitch, sweet!
http://www.spritestitch.com/
think he needs to contact them to correct this:
karahrhea is selling custom cross stitched hats on etsy, she’ll make you a custom one with your favorite sprite for only $25!
@phil: good to see something other than megaman for a change.......and I don't mean just from you, seems like megaman is 90% of the perler on the web

Ha yeah the Etsy page is run by a female friend of ours so it does get a little confusing.

That Starfy one is so adorable that it should be illegal.

Randy's rabbit from Guardian heroes:

Donatello, a tribute to the one game I've never beaten:

Earthworm Jim, overdid him a bit and his gun and flame got a bit melted, looks good if you stay at least a foot away though

Ginjirou, fav character from Guardian Heroes, love that game:

And not to blow my own trumpet, I think Buu looks awesome:

Also a group photo of everything I've done so far, have a few more ideas before I run out of all the useful colours:

Also, his holster looks like a scrotum. heh
oh, thats what that is, his holster *doh*, I honestly didn't know that, thought it was just some random part of his suit. I actually thought of leaving it out since I didn't know what it was and mainly because it's in a funny looking place, as you pointed out

It's a plastic canvas Sonic! This one was mainly an experiment to see how much of a pain it would be to do Pixel art in Plastic Canvas. It's actually not too bad. If you resize a sprite to it's exact dimensions, you can look up it's pixel count and figure out exactly how big of a canvas you need. Then it's just a matter of counting and a lot of sewing.
I had actually planned on him being cut out, but when I got him all sewed, I realized the gap in his legs was going to make that impossible. So I just filled in the border around him and made it a wall art piece.
I only did his most basic colors because I don't have a lot of yarn right now. I need to buy more so I can do more detailed 16 bit sprites. I think this is a good start though!

I think I am going to turn these into kitchen magnets and have a battle on my fridge! I just haven't decided which monster from the game I want to make yet. I also plan on making the Monk and the Thief and perhaps some weapons too. My hand just hurts from making these this weekend.

That's awesome, but why wouldn't he move the fireball a bit to the right so that the dragon sprite would be undisturbed?http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/AS_Odin/dragon.jpg
He's student teaching now so no more time for cross stitching, but over the holidays he wanted to do a masterpiece and he just finished today.

Sheep Man

Chill Man

Blade Man

Jason and SOPHIA THE THIRD from Blaster Master

And in celebration of the DSiWare release of Dark Void Zero (which is pretty damn cool), I whipped up this sprite of the game's hero, Rusty.

I also finished my collection of Mega Man 1 bosses.

(too bad I can't find a lossless version of it...but here at 2x2 size, just to appreciate the scale of this thing)

Would take years to finish that though...would probably need to paint most of it.
A few others I'd love to make:

That would be scores of feet long if done with perler beads. It'd be amazing, but I don't know where you could put it.

I'd put it on my wall.
Maybe when I get my own house and dedicate a game room it could be a project of mine. Not sure how well I'd manage with my color blindness though...might be hard to guess some of those colors (since I'm assuming I'd need to hand paint a lot of it for lack of available colors).
A quick check tells me that in battles, FF VI has a resolution of roughly 240x210. With 4 battle screens for the boss, that's just over 200,000 Perler Beads. If I were to do just the boss without the background, you could cut that down to less than 80,000 beads most likely. It would stand 840 beads tall. How big is a single bead?
edit: using the Mario on the DS Lite above as a guide, a bead is about 0.25cm x 0.25cm. The final product would end up being around 2.1m tall, or 6'10".

My Mega Man Kubrick & Be@rbrick set arrived today, and the packaging inspired me to create a new Perler bead sprite.
Heh. I was about to ask when did Mickey Mouse turn into Dr Manhattan and become a Megaman character

If it's 840 perlers tall, it would be 12.5 feet. 28 beads is five inches.I'd put it on my wall.

I guess the beads at the top of the page are smaller than the average bead. So I guess it's not doable in any house I'll own after all

yeah, I was using mini hama beads for all my beading. I bought the mini ones for the sole purpose of doing detailed pieces like the ones you've posted and not have them take up too much room. So the Mario on my DS lite is half the size and the Buu is smaller than an A4 page and still has all the detail.
mini hama = 2.5mm diameter
normal hama/perler = 5mm diameter
You can probably just place the normal size ones with your fingers or the tweezers but the mini one's were unusable for me until I started threading them on a paper clip and using that to place them by letting them fall off it one by one.
They also melt faster so the ironing can be tricky on larger pieces but even with the normal size ones I'm sure the ironing takes a while to get use to.

I also just finished this sprite of 8-bit Frost Man. I put him next to his diminutive buddy, Ice Man, for a size comparison.
Whoa. If that's from Megaman 10, Nintendo totally stole that sprite from Rockman 8 FC, or you did the Rockman 8 FC sprite. Which is it?
Here's my Frostman (along with the other 7 robot masters from Megaman

and just for shits and giggles, here's some sprites I made just after Megaman 9 was released. I would've never guessed that I'd be seeing (most of) these guys again so soon!

Enhanced in full color, here are the four Rockman Killers from the Gameboy Rockman World 1-4 games. From left to right: Enker, Quint, Punk and Ballade. Remaking black and white Gameboy sprites is a ton of fun! Who knew!?

Wouldn't it be Capcom doing the stealing, and not Nintendo?Whoa. If that's from Megaman 10, Nintendo totally stole that sprite from Rockman 8 FC, or you did the Rockman 8 FC sprite. Which is it?
But no, the Frost Man I made is the sprite seen during the Weapons Archive boss in the first Wily stage in MM10. And its definitely a different sprite than the one in Rockman 8 FC. Just compare my sprite to the one seen in this video: http://www.youtube.c...iXh3tzI#t=3m44s. Completely different.
And really, isn't it the Rockman 8 FC game that's stealing from Capcom? I mean, between the stolen level design, character design, music, and ripped sprites, that game is one massive dose of copyright infringement.
