What are perler beads?

Just the best thing ever. You put the beads on a grid, iron them, and they stick together. Perfect for making sprite art.

Broadband penetration in the US is still under 55% last time I checked and only growing at 2-3 percent a year.

Seriously? I couldn't imagine using 56k anymore, anything past e-mail and simple web browsing would be unbearable. Web applications are no longer designed for 56k.

Granted that could mean they have no internet at all, which is pretty much every old person. If we are only losing them at 2-3 percent a year that is too slow!

Please tell me you read the actual report with it's flawed data before posting....the real number is very hard to come by since some providers actively lie. A different report listed the state of Kentucky as having 100% broadband penetration which is a joke.

That Splash woman sprite looks pretty killer man.

I wonder how hard 16 bit sprites are to work with with those. I'd love to make me a whole Sonic and Knuckles set.

It really depends on the game and the sprite. The sprite for Sonic is small so it wouldn't be difficult, but since 16 bit games have more colors, you might also need more variety in your bead colors to get an accurate look.

Thanks for the link on the front page, Phil. :D When I saw it I called my brother immediately. He's finishing up the Mike Tyson ring, if I can find some pictures I'll post them

Those Punch-Out!! sprites are fantastic!

Since I posted that blog entry about Perler Beads, I whipped up a couple more. Here are my latest creations.

Posted Image

This is, of course, Mario from the original Super Mario Bros. I originally just made regular and super Mario, but then I realized that I needed to make a mushroom to show the transition.

Posted Image

These are sprites from the Mega Man parody Stinkoman 20X6 over at Homestar Runner. The fellow on the left is Stinkoman himself (the videogame version of Strong Bad) and the guy on the right is 1-Up, Homestar Runner's alter ego.

I also wanted to show off the snazzy drawers that I picked up at The Container Store. They were about $14 each, and each drawer perfectly holds 1000 beads, exactly the amount that you get when you order individual colors from the Perler Beads website.

Heh, I think it's funny that you made a point to arrange the colors of the beads on your drawers in rainbow order, instead of alphabetical order. :D

Are you going to make Trogdor and the burned peasants? Or do Atari era sprites not translate well.

Normally I'm an alphabetical order kind of guy (as my game/movie libraries would prove), but that would be impractical for the beads. If I need to grab a particular shade of blue, for example, I want them all grouped together so that I can quickly compare which one best matches the original sprite. If they were in alphabetical order, the blues would be scattered too far apart.

And yes, I'll probably get around to making a Trogdor and peasant at some point.

How is the cross stitching done, is it on the cap or on something else then attached to the cap later?

He cross stiches them onto some sort of plastic grid, then sows that onto the cap.

It took me a while to actually find a place I could get beads, looked at a load of online perler suppliers but the shipping to Ireland was doubling the price.

What I found out though was that the european equivalent are called Hama beads and what's better is they do them in mini beads. It means anything you make is basically the quarter of the size and although I like the 8 bit stuff I do plan on maiking some 16 bit stuff with a bit more detail, the size some of them would probably turn out as was off puttting with the normal beads but with the mini ones they should be a managable size. They are apparently a bit harder to work with but I have girly hands anyway so shouldn't be a problem.

My order has now shipped so I'll try and post again if I manage to make anything decent.
