It's a real problem in certain areas of the swamp...though never seemed to occur when my life was on the line.I also had a lot of slowdown and frame rate problems, but if it doesn't cause a death I don't mind it.

E3 is June 11-13! Early discussion, conference chats, livestream links and any other matter of hype and worry can be found in the E3 2013 thread. This is sure to be a doozy.

I love the commentary feature, we need more games with dev commentary (I know Half-life and Riddick does this). It's too bad it's so freaking impossible to unlock. I found most of them on Youtube, but not all, unfortunately; and the quality is lacking.
I tried very hard to get these, but even using a guide I found it impossible and 90% of the time I didn't even run out of time. I found the 1 hit kill thing an impenetrable barrier in making it though the levels running at full speed.

To help, apparently you can get 90+ coins, then get a horseshoe to keep you from dying when you do the speed runs. I only tried one (where you need to use the barrel) and found it hard as hell, so never again took the chance of failing.I tried very hard to get these, but even using a guide I found it impossible and 90% of the time I didn't even run out of time. We're also trying to line up a guest for the Game Club, and the scheduling just wasn't working this week.
What this means, of course, is that everybody has another week to play and leave your comments here or on our voicemail line (713-893-8069). And don't forget that you can always e-mail us an MP3 message as well.

Also, if you want to have some fun, jump off the top of the spinning voodoo mixer with the water invincibility ability. Man, I thought the madness would never end.

Edit: As I typed this, I reflected that I didn't remember such bullshit the first time I played the game. That's when a theory formed in my head. I transferred my save to a memory card and moved from playing on my 80GB PS3 to a PS2. There is a ton of extra visual stuff that wasn't showing up on the 80 Gig. I couldn't see the grid or the green outlines on all the objects. I guess "No significant problems" wasn't exactly tested all the way through the game. Now maybe I have a chance of winning.

I just arrived at the Panda King's stage, and so far have been enjoying the game. The only flaws, aside from the aforementioned checkpoints, are the mini game stages.

The completely unnecessary "life" system gets on my nerves. To me it seemes like this was a hold over from older generations of game consoles, and that the devs put it in just because "that's how games are."
The one hit kills don't bother me (at least until I run out of lives), especially because the standard enemies (at least in the 2 stages I've finished) are one hit kills themselves.
I like how Sucker Punch broke up the gameplay by having different "mini-game" sections in each area, but unfortunately the controls are poorly done in these sections and they become frustrating instead of fun.
The barrel stage has been my favorite so far, if I could only show one level to a friend in order to explain the attitude and nature of the game, this would be it.

Doing the sprints also revealed how ineffectual many of the enemies in the game are. 90% you can just run past.
I didn't have a problem with the health, the horseshoes were basically like the system Spyro had. The levels weren't long enough for a Game Over to really ever bother me. The one thing that frustrated me was dealing with stealth with limited useful moves. Just coming back from the other two games, I really missed some of the improvements in that regard.
Final Boss gave me tons of trouble the first time I played the game, but this time I got through it pretty easily. Some of those final platforming sections are really awesome. First game I've completed for Game Club, so yay. Man, I love this game.

Finished the last of the Master Thief sprints, with only a bit of damage to my blood pressure. The game does seem to have a lot more problems with slowdown than I remember, and they are exaggerated by trying to go very fast. It's amazing how much the game starts feeling like Mirror's Edge during those timed runs. Or I suppose I should say Mirror's Edge felt like Sly Cooper.

It was good. I listened to them all, and it's fun to hear how they thought up particular parts and planned out everything. One thing that sucks is anytime you die in the level the commentary has to start over, which sucks if you want to actually play the level while you listen.

It's interesting to hear that people have trouble with the Ms. Ruby fight. I didn't have any problems at all, and I'm the guy who always gets the Square button and the Circle button mixed up in quicktime events and rhythm games.
I didn't have much trouble with this fight either. I thought Ruby actually tossing the button shapes at you that you then had to dodge by pushing the same ones was an interesting take on the whole quick time scenario.
However, whoever thought killing 50 chickens in two minutes while avoiding insta-kill enemies was a good idea needs to be shot.

Announcement Time: We pushed back the Sly Cooper Game Club another week. We'll now be talking about it in Episode 138. Our recording session yesterday went fairly long, and we felt that cramming Sly in after all of our other talk would result in a lackluster discussion.
We're also trying to line up a guest for the Game Club, and the scheduling just wasn't working this week.

Just get on with it, already. Greg is really excited to start playing Majora's Mask again.

I also appreciated the way the game had sort of dynamic difficulty system. If you really were terrible at something, but kept at it, the game rewarded you (gave you charms, changed the speed something came at you, etc.)

I couldn't agree more with drunkmessiah's thoughts on the voice actor for Sly. The other characters are way over-the-top, sounding like generic Saturday morning cartoon characters, which just makes Sly's soft, calm voice even creepier. It's what I'd imagine a date rapist to sound like.
The regular enemy design is pretty laughable - and not in a good way. Considering the POP's past hatred of lame minions in Donkey Kong Country, I hope you all don't let "mole with a hammer" off the hook.
The cell-shaded graphics hold up quite well - especially when Sly is in motion. The core gameplay is also still very fun, even though I found myself frustrated by some cheap deaths early on. I definitely plan on moving on to the sequels after I finish this one.

Over the past few years, I've been slowly growing my PS2 library of good exclusives, as if it was multiplatform chances are I own the Gamecube or Xbox version already. Sly Cooper to me hit the mark of being a truly exceptional PS2 exclusive. As silly as it sounds, 3D platformers are a favorite genre of mine. I even like "bad" games in the genre like Malice for Xbox and Dr. Muto for Gamecube.
I am throughly impressed how well the game stands up graphicly and in terms of design. From the comicbook story to the diverse level design to the well devoloped and subperly voiced cast, to me its a real shame to me this title didn't go multiplatform, as it would have been one of my top played Gamecube games. Having played all that is worth playing on Gamecube, I'm so very thankful for gameclub and playerone for this recommendation. Ps2 games that time forgot is what I love to play. Truly awesome stuff.

It's one of my favorite genres as well...now play the other 2 in the series and the try the first Jak & Daxter and all the PS2 Ratchet's except for deadlocked (OK, give deadlocked a shot it's good, just not my cuppa tea.)Over the past few years, I've been slowly growing my PS2 library of good exclusives, as if it was multiplatform chances are I own the Gamecube or Xbox version already. Did you check the settings menu?I have all three of these and inspired by the podcast I sat down to start them the other day. Is there no way to change the X and Y axis in these games? I was unable to play it with everything being backwards from how I prefer to play.

Yes, and the manual. I know it can be changed with the PS3 collection, but doesn't seem to be a way on the first Sly (at minimum). I will look again though.Did you check the settings menu?

I never did get around to playing Sly 2 and 3 so I'm looking forward to those. Also this makes platinum numero 3!

I think Sly 2 is better in nearly every way...though you might be disappointed that the "challenge" (one-hit kills, static number of lives, in-frequent check points) is ratcheted down. To compensate, it's at least twice as long. One of the good things (if any) that came from my PS3 messing up repeatedly the other night is that it made me get up off my ass and finish this game since I was on my way to getting a Platinum. The save is copy protected, so I basically played it all night that night and finished the last few hours hoping my PS3 wouldn't die. Great game, and really fun platformer. It was made on the cusp when games started being a little more player friendly, so there's still a decent amount of challenge in there. I had beat this on PS2, but it was still a blast to play.

I thought they dragged on too long, Sly 2 not so much but I just wanted Sly 3 to be over so badly, it just seemed to keep going. I was glad when I finally finished and could just play the single standing master missions.
