This week! Voicemails, tweets and whatcha been playingses. In the first segment we cover a lot of ground, from favorite platformers and Sony's new ad campaign to utter disappointment at Best Buy's The Beatles Rock Band demo day. Games discussed during this 149th show include Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Uncharter, Shadow Complex, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Warriors Orochi 2 (PSP), Madden 10 and Peggle.

Beware potential spoilers for the first hour or so of Batman Arkham Asylum from 1:03:25-1:13:00.

And that, friends, is this week's episode. Note, although this episode is called Diabolical Boxes, we barely talk about the sequel to ProfessorLayton that came out last week.

Thanks for listening! Don't forget to visit our new web site at www.playeronepodcast.com. You can leave us a voicemail by calling 713-893-8069 or you can send a comment via MP3 to our email address, playeronepodcast@gmail.com. Don't forget to join our forums if you haven't already!

I warned Greg, insisting he use a hint coin!

I don't even want to think of the chaos from a puzzle involving liquid and three various-sized pitchers.

Greg Ford brings his usual barely anything to the podcast. Can we do a podcast where Ford has the mic problems Phil had last week to see if anyone notices?

Never seen someone on 4 videogame podcasts have less interest in gaming.

Hope we get some Monkey Island love two weeks from now. Episode 2 definitely features more of the characters you actually care about and keeps up a much nicer pace.

Also hope the crew sticks with Batman long enough to catch some of the really memorable moments.

Phil launching into CJ and the Gregs to the tune of Benny and the Jets a half second after I did so myself was my personal highlight of this episode. :>

That may be the problem. I know I'd burn out quick. The thing is, when Ford is with it and engaged, he is entertaining, and I miss that.

I love Ford's occasional sarcastic chiming in. The rarity adds to the hilarity. :D

I just saw that the original Phantasy Star is this week's Virtual Console game. Get a Game Club going on that bad boy! That game has so many bizarre quirks that would make for a hell of an interesting discussion.

I'm surprised that no one on this week's podcast talked about the release of the Policenauts fan translation, since it had been mentioned many times in previous episodes.

CJ, is the craptastic Best Buy you keep mentioning the one in midtown? When I lived in Atlanta a year ago, I had good memories of doing the walk of shame from Best Buy to Target and then to Gamestop in an attempt to get a new game the week it came out, usually resulting in complete failure.

Actually the Gamestop there had some great employees and didn't smell like 13-year old BO, but apparently nobody pre-ordered a damn thing (myself included), so they rarely had enough new releases to go around.

Could be worse though. I think it was either a Best Buy or a Walmart in Alpharetta where someone was shot during the PS3's launch.

Best Buys are weird now. If you don't see the game on the shelves, most of the time they are just locked in a cage behind the registers. I had to ask an employee when I was looking for the new Professor Layton and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Put the game on the damn shelf so that I won't have to nag one of you to get it for me.

As for Ford, I think he's just intimidated by Phil and the others.

The discussion about Mega Man covers at the end of the episode made me instantly think of this song.

I'm glad that Bonerjams made a splash. And Phil, you're right, I abbreviated first party games so that I could type out Bonerjams on Twitter.

I have no platinum trophies. Sad day.

Phil, you should really give this song by The Megas a try:

Please click the (more info) link in the upper right corner for the lyrics, as the lyrics are really great! This particular song is about the Air Man stage and is my favorite The Megas song. :)

I did listen to their Airman song. You can, uh, you can save your money.

I guess I'm just burnt out with the countless garage bands that do covers of/write lyrics to game music.

game music that has additional lyrics are always bad, imo. even the official tribute albums for games like SFII are terrible with lyrics and singing.

I feel the same way, mostly. The only "game songs" that I've enjoyed are Hyadain's stuff. All of his songs are in Japanese, but there are plenty of links to subtitled versions on YouTube.

I just finished Arkham Asylum. So friggin' good. It sucks that I gotta wait two weeks before I can talk about it.

It also sucks that CJ and Sewart will never finish the game so they can talk in length about it with me. Well, OK...maybe Sewart will finish it. It'll take him about five months, though.

Regarding Greg's comments about switching the difficulty on Batman, that's something that every game should have -- the ability to switch difficulties mid-way through.

That stopped me from finishing Dead Space, because I got to a point I'm not sure I could have gotten beyond without dialing back about an hour of gameplay.

If I've overestimated my talent, don't punish me for it... I'm willing to try to grind through a game that's gotten tough, but if it's a situation that appears hopeless, let me Nerf the challenge.

(BTW, still loving Batman, too... wish I had more time to play it, but my days currently are consumed primarily by baby duty and work... without the spare time at night I used to have as recently as a week ago)

I dunno... I didn't have any problems with it for a long time... had plenty of everything and then I started to realize -- too slowly obviously -- that I was dangerously low on ammunition for pretty much everything, and just hit a wall. I figure an hour-old save is the minimum I'd have to backtrack to resupply and progress even more carefully (I'd already cheated myself some cash).

I can't recall the last time I actually cared enough to stick around and grab a game's collectables (We can ignore Shadow Complex on this one). Getting the bios, interviews, and Riddler reactions are good incentives to keep at it in Batman. Anyone going to go through the challenges? My interest isn't enough to carry me on through those I'm afraid.
