It's a three-man podcast this week with CJ, Phil and Greg (Sewart). We talk a little bit about Penny Arcade Expo (and the flu/sickness that struck many of its attendees), The Beatles Rock Band, Batman Arkham Asylum, Uncharted, Mr. Driller W, Muramasa, Guitar Hero 5, Contra ReBirth, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Sonic the Hedgehog Project Needlemouse and much, much more. Like we filled up nearly two hours there.

Thanks for listening! Don't forget to visit our web site at www.playeronepodcast.com. You can leave us a voicemail by calling 713-893-8069 or you can send a comment via MP3 to our email address, playeronepodcast@gmail.com. Don't forget to join our forums if you haven't already! You shouldn't have announced that Greg Ford wasn't on. I would have been interesting to see if anyone noticed.

I have to disagree with CJ here. GH5 is like the easyest GH yet, theres a lack of "crappy metal" and with the song list, the charts, the no fail mode, party mode avatar mode, they are going harder for the casuals. Compare it to GH3 which had much harder songs and yes crappy metal, lots of it.

Oh yes, the only other band that could have a legitimate solo game would be Led Zeppelin

The Zombies in Uncharted are the Spaniards that "disappeared" from the island.

I really think that they could do a very interesting Pink Floyd game. Even if they just took The Wall and turned it into a game and take a lot of time with it I think it would be pretty cool.

Metallica being done right would have been pretty good also.

I don't think Sonic will be hand drawn - no way. I just assumed they'd do a 2.5D Kloana type thing in HD.

I just finished Uncharted 3 days ago and I wouldn't call the monsters at the end of the game Zombies because they are not undead. They are more like an army of Gollums on steroids.

I am happy to hear that Greg is going to play Policenauts. My brother has been playing it and it looks really cool. I want to suggest that you make Policenauts our next Game Club game. That or Rocket Knight Adventures, I love that game :)

"Bowser has no idea the Mario Brothers are inside him." No wonder Mario has never been able to seal the deal with Peach. %)

I really need to figure out what I'm missing with Arkham Asylum. I thought it was a really good game--tightly crafted, respectful of the license, etc. But it just never felt like anything particularly special to me. I don't think it would even land in the top 5 games I've played in 2009 thus far--with a crazy onslaught of great games still to come. I wonder if it comes down to your degree of adoration for The Batman.

what a fucking cocktease, Stewy. talking about MadWorld and Uncharted before Batman: AA, HAHA!

btw, funny that CJ got the Uncharted twist completely wrong. wtf CJ, ALIENS? lol. such a shame that Phil never played Uncharted. it's such a great game.

oh yea Stewy, i bought the CE. the Batarang blows but the bounded booklet is really nice and well designed. so glad you guys love the game. i really hope you can finish it up before the next show and talk about the rest. you should also check out the Challenges. incredibly fun.

I'm puzzled as to how CJ concluded the Batmobile in AA is the same as the '89 Batmobile, it's not even close. If anything, it takes most of its cues from the Batman Forever one (the protruding wheelwells, the batwing on the top, the visible motor) with a tiny touch of the animated batmobile (the front grill).

That shows a remarkable lack of taste. Batman the Animated Series, Justice League, and most of Justice League Unlimited fit into that timeframe.

Comics-wise, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell is really super awesome (although Batman himself appears in maybe 4 panels throughout the whole thing). The game references it a fair bit, too. Highly recommended.

Gotta echo Greg on missing the fun that was to be had during Halo LAN get-togethers. I think that was the only setting where long CTF matches were fucking great. I only got to really do it with the first game. Every match usually ended with us convening in a room to yell at one another and throw blame around before someone rushed to the host and started a new match. Did anyone else ever LAN Double Dash or Air Ride? We actually managed to get two nights of 8 player Double Dash and it was fantastic. Air Ride (specifically City Trial) benefited from LAN because whenever someone found a legendary ship piece, shouts would echo from the other rooms to form temporary alliances to hunt down whoever got the piece(s). It was usually me. I miss those days.

If you decide to pick ODST up, Greg, I'd love to play some campaign coop with you! I'm looking forward to spending the night after release playing through the campaign fresh in 4p coop like I did for Halo 3. That was an insane amount of fun compared to now when everyone is breezing through the levels and complaining about the Cortana segments.

Policenauts heavily featured all of the stuff I don't like about Hideo. Maybe half the game is spent explaining the intricacies of this make believe space world. Its similar to how Metal Gear tries to explain genes and nanomachines, except spread out over an adventure game.

Where Snatchers was a fairly fast-paced action thriller, Policenauts is a boring faux documentary that pretends like it will start moving, but really is just fucking with you. There are some good bits in there, but they're all separated by mandatory dialog trees explaining how this space station is totally feasible in real life that you have to drill through multiple times before proceeding. Just go up to anyone that has played the game and mention the space museum. They will then hate you for at least a week.

Also groping. Jonathan should have been locked up for sexual harassment and given a restraining order against all women way before he became a Policenaut.

I will say this, though.

I think the only way we're going to get a Led Zeppelin Rock Band is if Harmonix just backs up a Semi full of money in each surviving band member's mansion.

Zeppelin is snotty enough about licensing their music as it is. Combine that with the fact that Page has already come out and denounced the music game trend.

I find it kind of sad that they have that attitude. Rock Band and Guitar Hero has gotten so many kids into good classic rock that I don't see why they would scoff at getting an entirely new generation of fans into their music. I would buy a Led Zeppelin Rock band on day one if it ever happened.

My reaction to Uncharted was the complete opposite of Greg's reaction. That crappy jetski diversion aside, I was loving the game up until the twist. Sure it only does a couple things, but it does those couple things so right, perfectly hitting on the "30 seconds of fun" idea the guys at Bungie always talk about. But the twist was awful. The monsters were annoying as hell and completely broke the flow of the game (you can't go into cover because you will die, you can't aim because, again, you will die, and you can't melee them either; all you can do is run around like an idiot shooting at the hip which sucks). If that absolutely redeeming final chapter wasn't there, Uncharted's ending would have been completely worthless (though not as worthless as inFamous' ending lolz).

I liked both jet ski sections and cruised right through them the first time so when CJ first started hating on them I figured he was being CJ....but then enough people mentioned issues with it and Amy Henning even said they weren't happy with the final product so I guess I was just lucky.

I played Uncharted a few weeks ago for the second time, and really couldn't see the big problem with the jetski areas.
It's either not that big of a deal, or I'm awesome at video games, and I KNOW I'm not awesome at video games.
I don't really get the controversy with the "twist" either. Supernatural stuff and ancient artifacts go together like salmon and tuna-fish! (or was it peanut butter and jelly?)

On the subject of Muramasa, I have to disagree with some of Phil's comments. It certainly isn't without fault, but the controls, while a bit strange at first, works perfectly once you get the hang of it, especially for combat purposes. In an interview done with the people at Vanillaware in the latest issue of Play magazine, they stated that the Nunchuck + Wiimote is the control scheme that they designed the game for, and in that context, using up on the analog stick for jump makes perfect sense - all the other readily available buttons (A, B, C, Z) are already used. And because you can hold down A and then use the analog stick to air-dash (an integral part of air-juggling, which is a big key to success in the game, especially on Shura mode), it works very well. I tried all 3 control schemes, and using the D-Pad on the Classic Controller really doesn't work for me. Using a Wavebird was a bit better, but I still preferred the ability to cycle through items in both directions that the Wiimote offers.

Anyway, overall I enjoyed the game, but I will admit if it wasn't for the amazing visual style and great music (I absolutely love the track - BGM_00011 - that plays on wheat field areas and some forests), it wouldn't have been a must-have. And I can't help but think that if it retained the visuals, music, and combat system, but had Metroidvania-esque level design, exploration, and upgrading, it may well have become one of the most amazing games ever.
