Episode 169 (01/18/10) - A Cross Between Other Podcasts and Zelda

This week! We talk about games! (Isn't that every week? Yes it is. Stop asking questions.) Titles discussed include Batman Arkham Asylum, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, The Saboteur, Dragon Age (with a special guest!), Bayonetta, Words With Friends, Tumbledrop and much, much more. Plus, your tweets and voicemails. Well, just one voicemail. Because we ran out of time. Because CJ didn't want to have to edit a two-hour podcast. And because Garageband keeps crashing on him.
Own an iPhone/iPod touch? We've got an app for that--the Player One Podcast player app is available now. Play shows new and old, read show notes, access the show Twitter, website, email, voicemail line and more! Plus, you'll be able to access bonus audio and video content (soon, once we figure out what that is). Click here to download.
Follow us on twitter at twitter.com/p1podcast.
Thanks for listening! Don't forget to visit our new web site at www.playeronepodcast.com. You can leave us a voicemail by calling 713-893-8069 or you can send a comment via MP3 to our email address, playeronepodcast@gmail.com. Don't forget to join our forums if you haven't already!

I, too, tried to watch the Power Rangers movie with my friend, but he wanted to watch Apollo 13. I snuck into the Power Rangers movie afterward and caught a bit of it. I was nearing 14 at the time, so I was probably too old for that shit. After looking at IMDB, I realize I only know the very first season of that show, because I don't really remember all the cast from the movie. I remember Trini and Zach, etc.
Oh, and it's funny being Canadian and remembering most of that commercial shot for shot. And even funnier that I owned that exact Corsica the Mother drives, and it was the worst car I've ever owned, and I owned an '84 Chevette. "Shit brick" we called it. The Corsica cost us a few thousand dollars in repairs in the one year we owned it. Go Chevrolet.

Blasted CJ can't keep his Power Rangers straight. Making me look the fool!

Then felt immediately ashamed of myself for knowing that.
Also. Loved the Lunar talk. I can't believe that Working Designs fanboys are bitching about the new dub. I love Working Designs too, but not enough to get all pissy over voices being changed.

I'd kill for a revival of that. Full retail, remake, or even just an enhanced XBLA port.
I guess there's that Blood Bowl game, but I haven't read too much into that. I don't think it's quite in the same vein.

I am playing Yakuza 2 right now, and at the start of the game they give you an optional video that will cover the events of the first one so there is no need to play it. I am going to assume Yakuza 3 does the same.

Loved the Lunar discussion, even if the annoying Internet detractors were given too much acknowledgment. The thought of a fan of that series boycotting the latest iteration because WD isn't involved is pretty infuriating.

Btw CJ, Phil's right, Bayonetta's combat is kickass and the story is ridiculous. Give it another shot. I can't wait for Phil to play more so he can give us his thoughts about the numerous Sega references.

That doesn't infuriate me at all. If people who claim to be fans of the series refuse to play a new version of the game for stupid, petty reasons like that, it's their loss. It won't affect me or my potential enjoyment of the newest release one little bit.
Sorry I had to step out on this week's show, though. Especially since it sounds like we actually had Lunar discussion, and I count that game as my fave RPG ever.

My wife loves it. Unlike other "check-in" non-games, it doesn't announce where you are. This one is the closest to being a real game as you try to maximize your earnings by owning properties with more visitors.
On the Lunar discussion: WD had a style to translation but it's by no means the definitive way to localize a title. People are so stupid.

Same here, I do all three (Foursquare, Gowalla, and My Town) with varying levels of frequency. I probably do Gowalla more since adding sites is so much smoother and easier than Foursquare. There's also Cause World which donates "Karma" that you generate for checkins to various charities and Yelp just added check-in functionality.

At this point, I'm just trying to find time to play around Dana's Dragon Aging.

Don't worry. Considering we're both going to get the new Lunar, I'm sure there will be plenty more discussion about it soon.

Bioware's games since Baldur's Gate (circa 1998) have included what TVTropes calls "romance sidequests." According to a Retronauts podcast, Bioware staff found that fans enjoyed the ability to let their custom main characters build relationships with NPCs, so it's become a common feature in the company's titles. The TVTropes article cites a few non-Bioware Western and Eastern games which include similar elements. Some were created before '98, some after.
While I'm on this topic, I might as well mention two sites that I recently found which appeal to my interests as a crazy fan. First, a group is creating its own Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side translation at http://sites.google....te/tokimemogs1/ ... so if Dana wants to embrace her inner shoujo fangirl, then she might be able to do so someday soon. Second, even though it's a coincidence that it was written within days of the Persona 3 Portable localization announcement, she might be just as amused by this rather interesting look at the female lead character's story: http://kaho-yukimura....com/39039.html
