How is the game's front end? One console gaming thing I've never gotten used to is having the patience to wait as stuff loads on a menu screen... It's something that could be particularly annoying to me in a game like this where you're moving through menus a lot to tune and trick out your car.

Photo mode was my favorite aspect of GT4 by far.

There are plenty of videos out there to watch.

I could spend a lifetime in photo mode.
Awesome photochop. Can't wait to mess with it.

I'd tell you, but Tigerriot would be pissed.
Hahahahaha!!!!
That's kind of exactly what I was thinking...I hope Ty doesn't read this.
So what do you think so far? I'm contemplating picking it up tomorrow or just letting someone get it for me for Christmas. I have so much stuff to play right now that I don't really have time for it, but it's a new GT, for God's sake.

This actually makes less sense in practice than you'd think. My father has a dedicated racing setup (he's played nothing but GT5 Prologue on his PS3) and with a race wheel both in your hands and on screen, there's a bizarre disconnect that kind of dampens the immersion.I'd only ever use cockpit view if I have a proper wheel setup, otherwise? No.

Greg, when you get the game I would love to hear your thoughts on this as well since I know you felt the same.

I've got the same concerns as our putrid prelate. Does it feel as sterile as Forza? And does it lack the carrot and stick progression of Shift/Hot Pursuit?

I was reading back through this thread since I not had time in months to really follow any games at all. Did you say there are go-carts in the game Mik? Like in Virtua Racing for the Saturn? That is awesome.

And I do have RealTriggers on my PS3 controller, but it's just not the same as the 360's triggers.

Is there a PS3 controller with the triggers and analog stick of a 360 controller? I'd love to play this game with better triggers and the stick in the correct position.

you could try one of these

It sounds like these inconsistencies are really a downer. Not only are 80% of the game's cars just recycled models from GT4, but so are a good number of the tracks. People are saying the game just has this crazy yin/yang feel to it, where one cars look stunning, and the one next to it doesn't. One track looks amazing, but the next one is anything but.
It's really a shame they didn't realize how off putting this can be. I've said it before, if I could just turn off all the GT4 cars, I would do it. I'm OK with only having 200 cars, but having to put up with the less than stellar looking aspects of the game is just annoying. I hope they realize this and patch in the ability to disable all those old cars.
It's really looking like GT5 is essentially a set up for GT6, which will probably end up being the true GOD of sim racers for this gen. I expect we'll see GT6 in the fall of 2012.

This has been my biggest concern the whole time. After playing a hundred plus hours of Forza 2, I got burned out on F3 after a dozen hours or so mainly because it was so clinical and didn't have a lot of the modern tricks games have to push you forward. And it's a shame because it's technically better in every way.

I picked up one of these adapters a few months ago, and voila, no more poor PS3 controller for me to deal with! Plus, my arcade sticks now work on either 360 or PS3!
Granted, these adapters require a wired controller, which is soooo 2004, but it's a good trade-off for me. I probably shouldn't call the Dual Shock 3 a "poor controller"--it's fine--I just REALLY like the 360 controllers.
Also, I live w/ the minor fear that Sony will come along with a patch to eliminate these adapters, but it's not been an issue yet.

Good review, though it confirms some of the fears that I had about GT5, particularly the multiplayer.

Holy shit. The online sounds way worse than I expected, and my expectations weren't that high to begin with.

Great driving, lousy game. Is anyone surprised by this?
I am. I really am. As the Eurogamer review rightly points out, it's like this game was developed in a vacuum, where Forza 2 and 3 never existed. How could Polyphony not have taken any lesson from the past 5 years of videogames, where online modes matter, and certain feature sets are expected?

@Stewy - they were short shipped, so not enough collectors editions for preorders at any EB in Halifax. They are getting more on thursday/friday, but that still won't cover preorders.

GT is the one game where I just enjoy driving a car on a track. I don't care about racing other cars, or the structure of the game's progression. I just love the relationship between the car and the road.
I can still get my strictly "racing" fix from plenty of other places if I can't get it from GT.

Yes to the sterility. No to the lack of carrot & stick. There's an experience/leveling system this time. It's not as CoD-inspired as something like Shift, but it does keep you pushing to advance.I've got the same concerns as our putrid prelate. Does it feel as sterile as Forza? I should have the full-on review finished in a few hours. There are a couple more things I want to do first. I decided pulling a late night and getting an extra 6-7 hours into the game was better than being the 12:01 a.m. embargo buster.
