Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
The Doctor
as made famous by Various Artists
played by Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith
A Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, he lost his planet in the Last Great Time War and now wanders the galaxy looking for companionship saying such catchphrases as "Fantastic!", "Allons-y!" or "Bow ties are cool".

Posted Image
Rose Tyler
played by Billie Piper
She's a general no-talent Londoner who finds the Doctor when a group of shop mannequins attack her. She falls in love with the Doctor and is eventually separated from him.

Posted Image
Jack Harkness
played by John Barrowman
He is an "omnisexual" rogue Time Agent who eventually becomes the lead character of its "edgy" spin-off series, Torchwood.

Posted Image
Martha Jones
played by Freema Agyeman
She is the Doctor's next companion, a medical doctor who constantly gets captured or falls into peril even when the Doctor isn't around. Like all the hip companions, she falls in love with the Doctor, but he doesn't notice because he's pining over his poor lost Rose.

Posted Image
Donna Noble
played by Catherine Tate
She is his first fiery redhead companion who makes it clear that she doesn't "wanna mate" with him. She acts as his conscience for most of her stay as companion in the show.

Posted Image
River Song
played by Alex Kingston

Spoiler

Posted Image
Amy Pond
played by Karen Gillan
She is the Doctor's second fiery redhead companion. She meets the Doctor as a little girl and again as an adult. Amy doesn't seem to have a catchphrase though she is known for being very tall and wearing short skirts almost all the time.

Tom Baker is amused by this statement.

Also, shame on you for not including River Song on your list of characters.

Also, John Barrowman went to the same high school as I did.

I can't make up my mind about the new Doctor Who. I watched the first series with Christopher Eccleston then just lost interest when the new Doctor came along. However, I did catch two shows this past weekend, where Miss Jones decides to leave and then the next episode he crashes into the Titantic. I then realized that the show is kind of a huge crazy nuts silly piece, but that I did enjoy it. lol

I hope to try and catch the new series with the new Doctor, because I hear his new assistance is a BABE.

Spoiler

I don't know...there's certainly episodes throughout the full run that are bloody horrible. Mostly it's the special effects that get singled out for being so bad that they add to the charm. Multiple times you can see visible zippers on alien costumes and more often than not, model work is quite apparent as model work. They had almost no budget and did what they could.

For the most part the scripts are well done. Certainly some of the situations and villains come across as either campy or just plain silly. But they never set out to write a "serious" SF show. People seem to tolerate Lost and Star Trek and Star Wars...so pegging Doctor Who as being bad seems self-serving. Within the genre it's maintained a decent level of quality. Acting quality - especially among the side characters - is up and down. The leads, for the most part, do a good job.

Unfortunately over 100 episodes are still missing from the early years, including most of the episode with the first Doctor transformation. :(

The Fox co-produced made-for-TV film (which featured the Eighth Doctor) is embarrassingly bad.

I certainly thought so until I got into it. I think I needed to see the second episode of the new series to really "get" what the show is about, when they call the old jukebox an "iPod" and say "this is an example of classical music" when playing Tainted Love.

I think a lot of the show is being amused by the fact that a salt shaker with a shrill, menacing voice is one of the most evil and powerful things in the galaxy.

Well, they did do the Red Dwarf: Back to Earth mini-series last year. And there have been hints that a new series is possibly in the works based on that show's success.

Yeah, that's probably fair. Unfortunately - for me - his short reign as The Doctor is tainted by how horrible the film was and by how shoddy the transformation was handled. What made him an even more bitter pill to swallow was that Sylvester McCoy was one of my favorite Doctors, even though he was saddled with Mel for much of his run.

Spent the weekend watching a few episodes on BBC America (I have not netflix) and I have to say that I really like the 10th and 11th doctors more than Doctor number 9. But of those two I'm really starting to like Doctor 11 the most.
Also, I'm really digging on Amy Ponds. She's a bit more his equal like Martha Jones is I think but much cuter. I just wish he would fall for her like he did Rose that would be very nice.

I know, but still... i think she would be more compatible with the Doctor than Rory. I didn't like him too much in the first episode, Rory that is. Also, wasn't Rose in a relationship when she met the doctor and she still fell for him?

Yeah, not sure if you have seen it yet but there is an episode that deals with this. The thing is, The Doctor did not want what happened between Rose and her boyfriend Mickey to happen to Amy and Rory. He actually goes and picks up Rory so he can keep them together.

I understand, still it would be nice for them to give the Doctor a bit of romance as oppose to the ocassional one night stands. To be fair, I've only seen three episodes of season 5 so I may understand the relatioship more once I see it unfold. I just don't think that Rose was really into Mikey as much as Mikey thought they were. I mean if a time lord can steal her heart that fast, then I don't think there was s future to start with. lol

That's what The Doctor does. he takes people who would would have perfectly normal lives if they never met him and shows them extraordinary things and changes their lives forever. That's actually one of my favorite dynamics of the series. He is the very definition of "reality smashing"

I've been re-watching all the outer limits recently so I think I'm fairly good with dealing with crappy effects and cheesy as hell non-sensical (but awesome) storylines

You can start with this most recent series if you want, or go back to the 2005 series. A lot of the previous stuff in the show is really really fun but it depends on how much time you have to spend on a tv show.

I definately want to go further back than that though, get a feel for the origins, I really want to see some of the earlier Doctors. I did watch a few episodes from each of the last three season and they were quite good but I don't like watching TV shows on the tv stations schedule, I usually get a series and go through it in a week or so depending on how many episodes there are per season. I also have not paid for any satelite or digital subscription, my TV is solely for gaming so I'm always on the lookout for a lot of new series' (preferably ones that have completed seasons), that's the reason why I'm working my way through the outer limits now, I've watched everything else (sci fi) except Dr Who.

For the most part, the shows are stand-alone. I can't speak to the newer stuff which sounds like it has more angst and drama then the original shows. It's impossible to actually watch Doctor Who from start to finish so just jump in. Most of us started with Tom Baker or whichever Doctor was airing on PBS when we got hooked.

If you get Netflix you can see a bunch of the older stuff. I know they have a good bit of the Tom Baker years available. A lot of the shows from the first 2 or 3 doctors isn't available because it got lost or recorded over...apparently the BBC was very fond of re using video tape back in the day.

I've been watching a ton of season 2 with David Tennant and I tend to like him better than the doctor from the 1st season. I do however, think Matt Smith is a very good replacement, but I've not had a chance to see all of season 5 yet.

I know some people would just outright protest to watching things on a web browser, but that is the only way to watch some of the stuff that has never been released on DVD. There is one website in particular that has every single episode from every season.

Personally, I think that if I would of started watching the old series, I would of never ever got into it. Starting with the reboot in 2005 and onward, the show became one of my favorite things ever and also very possibly my absolute favorite Sci-fi universe ever. It is because of that that I want to go back and watch the older stuff. I don't think it would of ever worked for me the other way around.
