Millions of Dan Brown fans would tell me I was wrong for thinking he was a hack, too. So what?
You can find a hundred thousand people who love a 3D chatroom and pressing the left mouse button 300,000 times regardless of what kind of skin you put on it.

Yeah, or maybe it's actually good. There are plenty of mmos that wish they had the longevity and fanbase of CoH. The concept of superhero vs villain, especially in pvp, works quite well.
I don't know if dcuo will ever be worth a shit, but CoH was basically the third biggest paid mmo of the decade. The idea works just fine.

All MMOs come across as really idiotic on those levels. I mean in world of warcraft each town has 8 normal people and 2 million all powerful heroes? I don't see how superheroes are any different than the heroes of WoW or Lord of the Rings... or Star Wars. I mean the KOTOR MMO is going to have jedi running around killing rats for half the game...
I know you aren't big on computer games, and the only MMO you've spent time with is WoW, but others do exist and are doing quite well. And CoH is right at the top of that list. The superhero MMO clearly works.

This would be true if you only looked at it from the outside. CoH and DCU go out of their way to explain why supers aren't a rarity for their worlds. The old Superhero anthology series Wildcards did the same. None of these instances take place in the normal world. The concept (actually concepts, both macro and micro) "MMO" is antithetical to the concept of "superhero." It comes off as really idiotic.
And the concepts don't have to be smart to have a good game. The idea of a petal flying in the breeze collecting other petals as it flies along is pretty stupid but it was one of my GotYs for 2009.
Really though, and I say this as a comic fan, the concept of superhero is what's idiotic.
