Ninja Gaiden, Ultimate MvC3, ZOE HD Collection, MGS HD Collection, FFX HD and Katamari are all coming to Vita (and PS3, duh), some of them at launch, which is December 17th in Japan.

Are those series really that big in Japan? Monster Hunter's the big Japanese franchise right now and that's coming to 3DS in December, right?

I've gotta wonder if just doing console remakes on a portable is going to sell your system. Didn't seem to work for Nintendo w/Zelda...

That is a good launch lineup but I'm really getting the impression that Japanese publishers are going to be up doodoo creek if they are hitching their wagons to dedicated handhelds. A lot of people don't want to pay more than $0.99 anymore, and they are going to have a hard time connecting with consumers across the planet if they don't compete better on smart phones and consoles. I'm not saying the move to smart phone software is a good or desirable thing, it just is what it is.

I thought that monster hunter's numbers have been on the decline in the last two years?

In any case, I don't really care who sells what to who. I'll be getting monster hunter on my 3ds if they bring it here and ill be buying like 9003024030430 vita games. The future is bright.

I agree - both systems look like a win for me.

I don't know if the battery life they're quoting now (3-5 hours assuming everything is off) is a + for it or the 3DS. And I'm not too thrilled about the price for the memory sticks ($70 for 16GB when I bought a 16GB microSD for $29 a month ago? Ninja, PLEASE).

Gotta love Sony and their proprietary formats. When I bought my second digital camera I made sure it wasn't a Sony brand because I didn't want to deal with those damn Memory Sticks anymore.

Aren't they made by Sony and only used in Sony products?

They aren't exclusively made by Sony. The SanDisk sticks are often far less expensive.

I'm not sure that's true. I'm looking at an HP laptop with a Memory Stick Duo slot in it.

Well, I wasn't including card readers, since obviously almost all those 2-million-in-1 card readers will support it in addition to CF/SD/etc. I meant that only Sony electronics use Memory Sticks as their primary/only method of storage.

If you keep adding qualifiers then Memory Sticks will eventually be proprietary.

I don't really think that's much of a qualifier. The only reason you would need any Memory Sticks is if you have a device that can only use Memory Sticks, and those are only Sony devices. It's not technically proprietary (and I didn't say it was), but Sony is definitely the only one who truly uses/pushes the format.

I don't see what the issue with Memory Sticks is any more considering they're licensed to third parties and sold for less.

But, if it's supported by non-Sony products and it's officially sold by third-parties, then it kind of isn't proprietary-- even if it is a card-reader. Many electronics no longer support anything other than SD, and SD isn't considered "proprietary".

When you buy a SD card to use in a Nikon camera, you can keep using it if you switch to a Canon camera later. It may even work on an MP3 player or a Android phone (if you bought a microSD and was using a microSD-to-SD converter). On the other hand, if you buy a Memory Stick Pro Duo (or M2) to use in a Sony camera, the only other devices you'll be able to use it on are other Sony devices.

And like I said, it's not technically proprietary. It's just that nobody really uses (that is, pushes) the format except Sony.

If they were really like Apple, there would be no way to add memory at all. You'd have to buy a new higher capacity system.

Christ, I remember the days of working off Bernoulli drives and SyQuest. Those were both shit. Then the agency I worked for landed Iomega as a client, and I had to pretend that Zip drives--or worse, PocketZip drives--were awesome. Sometimes I hate being a whore.

God, those Zip drives and the infamous click of death when you feel your heart sink with the knowledge that all the data on there is gone.

They remain the reason that I have absolutely refused to by Iomega anything since, not even their rebranded optical media.

Sam Tramiel will sue if they sell it cheaper here.

My question is whether these new sticks will be only available from Sony (in which case the price may not be that much lower here). I would guess so (based on the assumption that they don't want people to download game files to their PCs, etc.)
