It's freemium with most of the money being spent being cosmetic.


Imagine Final Fantasy Tactics being played on a chess board. Asynchronous multiplayer only. Two races, one is free the other is $1.99 (the only gameplay piece that costs money). And surprisingly enough after 20 or so games I would give the slight edge to the free race being more powerful (or atleast easier to grasp).

I guess the small team has dudes from age of empires and orcs must die. They are active with the community and already put out a small patch with changes people wanted (40 active games instead of 20, a better tutorial, etc) with more to come.

Doesn't use gamecenter so you need to post your usernames.

Not a bad little game. I'm surprised I've managed a few wins against people here (after mort schooled me hugely in my first game).

My strategy gaming mostly begins and ends with Civ.

Been sick for the past few days, so I've been able to keep on top of it more than I normally would.

I'm not feeling it with this game. The ads in the free version are overly present and intrusive. At least early on, none of my games differentiate themselves from each other. And without a single player campaign to sink myself into I'm having trouble deciding if I really like the game or not.

What am I missing?

I guess I can talk about each point.


Ads suck but that's how free games roll. If you buy the dark elves the ads go away.



The game is same-y in the same way chess is same-y. If you keep doing the same stuff over and over I could see that sapping the fun out. Also having two races also keeps things a bit more interesting on that front.


Also the developers have stated on their twitter and on a FAQ on their site that they have no plans for a single player campaign as they think that asynchronous multiplayer is the best way to play.


But, really, it's just a matter of whether you enjoy playing a turn based strategy game against friends or not. To me it was fun off the bat and it remains fun now. If you don't find it fun after a few games I think it's unlikely anything is going to change. I mean the more you play the better you'll get and winning is more fun than losing, but, of course, the game isn't going to change in any substantial way.

The game itself it pretty simple and I can imagine burning out after a couple of weeks.

However, what has hooked me in is that its a pretty fun little 1v1 that (assuming you have an iPhone) you can play any time, anywhere.

It's almost like technology changes so fast yet we take it for granted. Sure, the game itself wont win any awards (although it is pretty good!) but the "always connected" platform elevates this up a bit to the realm of interesting. If it was single player I would never touch this game. That's what the DS is for, a meatier single player experience. I'll pay $1 to just beat people over the head for a couple of weeks and move on

To me this is like Words With Friends or Hanging With Friends. I started playing those, suddenly had a ton of games going, and burned out on it within a few weeks. I expect to burn out on Hero Academy fairly soon as I've got 20 games going with people. Though I have tried to cut down on actually playing my turns to once or twice a day.

Yep, like Words, or Carcassonne or any of the async multi games. I imagine ill be down to just a couple of games within a week, and then fire it back up once a new race comes out, or maybe a patch that changes things up a bit.

Yep. It can definitely get overwhelming, and then it's easy to shelve, and then whatever reason (a new race, an itch, etc) you pick it up again and fall in love all over again. It's funny how Async games do that. I've gone through that with every game you guys just mentioned as well.


Im still totally into Hero Academy, but I know it's not forever. That's just how this shit goes.

Dwarves win 90% of their games through crystal kill. Don't let that stop you stomping a unit at opportune times, but try to chip away at the crystal when you can, ending it a "power square" drill drop or just those guys that throw bombs to "splash" the crystals.
