Tournament FAQ!
I'm new here/haven't posted here in a while/just got a vita/etc AND I WANT TO JOIN! WHAT DO I DO?
It's easy, really. All you have to do is get on my friends list. My PSN is famousmortimer. My list keeps filling and but I try to keep purging so people can atleast get friends requests through.
Of utmost importance is that you tell me that you are from P1P!!! I'm getting a ton of friend requests, maybe from near, maybe from neogaf, maybe from having a bigtime internet podcast. Ok probably not for the last reason. So if I get a friend request with no other info I decline it if I don't recognize the name. Obviously, if Phil gets a vita and sends me a request I'll know who he is... but if CAPTNRXTHERMOMETER sends me a friend request with no other info I will probably reject it. Also, take note, you can't type a message when sending a friend request on the vita! So if you add me via your vita you will need to send another message (via group messaging) saying who you are.
Get it? Good.
Once you are on my list all you have to do is play. You will then be on my friends results page and I will automatically post your scores on these tournaments.
I missed the first day of the tournament, can I still enter?
No. Sorry. I was thinking of giving people an opportunity to come in late by giving them +1 or +2 over the highest score, but really these tournaments happen so often that I don't see a good reason to add more work for myself.
I would like to help!
That would be awesome! For the most part I think I have this under control, but I do worry that since I'm probably the only person that has everyone on their list that if I can't do a tournament I then won't be able to get the scores and it would screw the whole day. I don't envision this happening, as I have a lot of free time and can even do this stuff from work (well after a certain hour). But, life is complicated, i'm married, my wife is having some health issues, my mother in law is dying, we are trying to make a baby, and really im just giving you way too much fucking info right now... but any of that stuff could pop up and mean I dont get my daily in and therefore don't get the scores. So if someone else wants to take it upon themselves to be my backup, that would be rad. If not those days will just be considered rain outs, kinda like this first weekend with the PSN going down.
I guess the prerequisite for it would be having 20+ spots available on your friends list and that you plan on playing all three tournaments everyday.
I don't think its fair that some people have more powerful characters/clubs/etc
I agree! Though each strength (hit it far!) has a weakness (wait, that isn't going straight!), the people who play the most and have the best stuff are definitely at an advantage. Eventually we will start putting character/gear restrictions on people, but for now that's just how the cookie crumbles.
Your drawings for the winner suck
Yeah, that's kinda the point. You win and you get a drawing in the style of a four year old. This is more out of necessity than it is out of style though. Basically, I can't draw. So doing it as stupid as possible is really my only choice. Plus it's funny. To me.
Are you going to do this with any other games?
Yeah, probably. I am absolutely in love with the concept of asynchronous multiplayer. I think the vita offers a unique combo of smart phone features (the ability to snap screenshots and post them) with console quality games. So putting stuff like this together is fairly easy. The older and more complex my life gets the harder it becomes to play multiplayer games. When I was younger it was all on one screen. Then it was in one game over the internet. Now it's easiest to do it with things like this where you can play at your own pace. And I feel that adding custom tournaments like this adds a bit to it. I mean, we could all just look at our friends results each day... and that's cool. But having these tournaments, and this thread, for whatever reason it seems to up the ante even further. It works perfectly in a game like golf as well because you live and die with each stroke. It's intense and I really love that.
So going forward I'll be looking for other games that can achieve the same sort of results without adding more work on my end or the player's end. Unit 13 is interesting to me as I know they plan on having daily missions, but I do worry that you can play it multiple times and one thing I want to avoid is rewarding the person who has the most time to just play and play and play until he gets a score high enough (even though that person would likely be me since i'm a crackhead). But I do plan on looking into that. Maybe something with time trials in Motorstorm RC. I dunno, we'll see as each game comes out. What I don't want to do, however, is pull attention away from this. I don't think it would be good for the long term viability of these events if we just hopped from game to game to game and people felt overwhelmed spending money and then it only lasts two weeks, etc. My main focus is making sure this lasts as long as I can possibly make it last. And if i can do stuff on top of it, without hurting it, I will.
I write with a lot of unintended sexual innuendo.
HSG TIPS!
Via Juanster: There are two different types of spin.
Regular: Just hold the d-pad in the direction of the spin. It doesn't matter when you begin the button press, just as long as you are pressing it while you hit the ball.
Super Spin: While the power meter is building up, press the opposite direction of the spin you want. Keep holding this direction until and during you set the power. When the meter is coming back, press the actual direction of the spin you want. Again, it doesn't matter when you begin these button presses, just as you are holding them while you hit X.
Note: You will only get actual ball-rolling-backwards-after-landing backspin with superspin and perfect impact.

Via famousmortimer: Watch the angle of the ground when you are hitting. In the bottom right there are little meters that look like the air bubbles in a Level. If you are sitting on a hill that dips to the right the ball will then fly to the right when you strike it. So you will need to compensate by aiming to the left of where you actually want it to go. Sometimes it's best to layup a bit shorter to land on flat ground than to have to make a shot off of a hill like that.

Via Kurichan: Just go around the house/windmill/building/etc, you'll thank him later.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Via famousmortimer: You can skip it off the water if you have giant brass balls. It works best with woods and with low shots (top spin).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Via famousmortimer: Watch the rules! Power Shot +2 means that every single time you use a powershot in that tournament you get a two stroke penalty! Big cup is, obviously, a big cup. Impossible cup means that each pin location is at the absolute most difficult spot on the green. There are also other ones that are self explanatory (gale force wind, rainy, etc).
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Via Juanster: Using triangle and circle to hit the ball: Triangle ups the power by about 2% and circle lowers the power by about 2%. These are helpful to adjust power on the fly.
Keep in mind that these shots require a certain loyalty level. Keep an eye out for when you have unlocked them.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Via famousmortimer Likewise you can add power to a shot by doing a quick flick/waggle of the vita itself as you make contact with the ball, but this seems like a recipe for throwing your vita on the floor.

Via google/youtube
Rising Shot: A super top spin shot.
Homing Shot: A super backspin shot.
Super spiral: A super sidespin shot.
These need to be super spin (see the first tip) and they need to go in if you are trophy hunting.
