Not F.E.S. but FEZ.

At its core, its a 3D platformer with the worst camera of all time.

Kidding of course.

Its pretty neat so far. I'm enjoying it. The demo was weird. You select New Game and the demo starts right away and you are immediately running and jumping around switching the axis. You collect all of the little blocks and you get the "if you want to earn the achievement and continue to play, you need to buy the full game." which I did. Doing this doesn't unlock the chievo and brings you back to the title screen where you need to start a new game.

This time the new game is a totally different and starts much slower than the demo. I think its a good thing for the demo, but its odd. Has any other XBLA game done this?

I just went through the 4th big door in the hub world.

This game has a whole lot of style... and very little substance.

There. I said it.

I haven't played Journey, so I won't comment.

I want the record to show that I coined the term "Myst with Jumping" to describe Fez. With a little work, I think we can make that one catch on.

Hmm...a little further into it...I'm just kinda bored. The look isn't overly impressing to me. Everyone swooned over the look of 3D game heroes and I wasn't overly impressed either.

I'd rather my character moved faster and the game was more difficult. I appreciate nostalgic games, but having the 8 bit jumping noise all the time just gets annoying.

I'm totally not entitled to an opinion as I haven't played the game yet, but... that sounds like what I expected. Trailers made it look pretty gorgeous but I was having trouble imagining the idea sustaining a full-length game.

Traveling around in Fez was ultimately average. But the game's presentation and little puzzles made it for me. Some of those one-off sections are by far the high points of the game for me.

Not the best thing ever, but I got my $10 worth ultimately. It does feel like you're doing the same thing repeatedly in a lot of areas.

I guess I'll be the dissenter here, as I loved the game. The 2D/3D perspective is well-realized, but as I played longer, I appreciated all of the other mechanics on hand. The anti-cubes are arguably more interesting to obtain than the regular variety, with all sorts of trickery and coded messages to translate. The map is too confusing and there are plenty of technical hitches, but the quality of the level design and the quality of the art (not just the style, but all of the hieroglyphics and little details in each room) far outweigh the shortcomings.

Rotating the axis and seeing the level design change was cool for about 30 minutes. Then you realize that's all they can do with minor gameplay changes here and there. The lack of polish is a bit of a shame. I understand what they were trying to do in terms of loading the next area but having a level pop out and pop in during a transition is a bit rough to see. As for the cryptic stuff, that's going to take me a while. I'm not one of those people that looks up a faq to solve puzzles as that just ruins the fun.

I got frustrated trying to find the 8th gold block in the starting area. I did eventually find it, but my patience had worn thin by that point.

I'll go back to it eventually, but it doesn't have enough appeal to pull me away from anything I'm currently playing.

Is it ok to hold the overly glowing reviews this game is getting against it?

Its ridiculous. I can't remember who wrote it, but one reviewer wrote poetically about how Fez reminded people why we play video games. A bit much?

I think artsy games tend to get a bad rap because of the assholes who write reviews of them. Flower was a fantastic game that I loved but I still can't read the reviews that talk about it being a poem (even if that's something the dev's said themselves). It's like reviewers are so sick of writing about dude-bro that they just go FULL HIPPY when they get an artsy game... and it's fucking annoying.

On the topic of FEZ, I couldn't imagine giving less of a shit about this game. But I feel the same way about Kid Icarus so maybe i'm just stuck in vita-land right now as i'm working on my site.

This is basically my issue-- it's the main reason why I've stopped caring about this game.

The amount of media attention and gushing that it's getting is totally bonkers. If you pull up an article about it on Joystiq, they've created a whole heading banner dedicated to it.

I mean, it may be clever and interesting, but is it seriously the ingenious masterpiece everyone is making it out to be? Smart money says probably not.

Eh, I haven't listened to the stuff in question, but ironically it was Jeff's Quick Look of Fez that first informed me the game existed and convinced me I didn't really care to play it.

I like Myst and I don't get any connection, though.

I like Myst and I don't get any connection, though.

Myst and Riven are the only point-and-click adventure games I ever enjoyed enough to finish.

I don't think FEZ is as good as Myst (it lacks the interconnectedness and logical consistency) , the connection is largely the vibe that I get while playing i... wandering through mostly barren environments, looking at wall drawings that vaguely communicate a story, and almost all of the game's puzzles are based on basic observation. Turning random objects so they line up a certain way, making note of incomprehensible symbols, lots and lots of backtracking.

Oh man, such a condescending tone from Jeff. The bait and switch Fez has created is just eh........I wanted a charming puzzle platformer. One of the problems I had with the game was talked about on the Bombcast where you didn't know if you could solve a puzzle at that very moment or to skip it.

I dunno, he just made me want to go back to it, which I did.

I have to say, though, that it's weird how amazed he is about the inscrutable language puzzles that occupy the second half of the game. Not exactly sure how that makes the game drastically better. Why's it great that I have to look at a FAQ because some idiot savant translated everything in the fucking game?

Well, I finished the game today... or at least I got to the part where it ostensibly ends. I would encourage everyone to not bother playing any further unless you intend to look at a guide.

The things you're expected to figure out if you intend to go further are baffling beyond belief. How anyone cracked the alien language is beyond me.

I'm just a couple hours in and I'm determined to finish it, but it does feel more than a tad tedious. Maybe it's just my self-diagnosed mild OCD, but it drives me nuts that each door I go through leads to a new area with doors leading to new areas, which then also contain doors leading to new areas! Methodically working your way through each area can become nigh impossible and that distresses me. I have not tried messing with the map much yet, but I have heard that it is not much help. With that said, I am definitely charmed by the presentation and was actually pretty impressed that I could find the solution to a puzzle by scanning the TV with my fucking cell phone!
