So as we near the tail of this generation of gaming, I have noted that there is an increasing number of digitally downloadable games that are poofing from existence. A lot of them aren't something to get too worked up about, but I haven't heard much talk about it after Yaris years back. Virtual Console, Xbox Live, and PSN are all subject to numerous games that have been pulled from the services, including all downloadable TMNT games, which are now unavailable for purchase. Practically all the Irem games on VC have gone down, including the R-Types. Also, OutRun, which I remember the hosts talking about some not terribly long ago (to me) is also gone.

I guess what really sucks about this is I wish I knew how to tell what was going to drop next.

That kind of sucks, another downside of digital downloads. If you already own the game, can you redownload them? Or are they GONE, gone. I'm only asking as I bought R-Type from VC.

A lot of that has to do with licensing, I'm sure. I seem to remember Sega announced that Outrun was going down after their Ferrari license ran out. Not sure what's up with Irem games, though. Unless whoever owns the rights to them has sold them or just doesn't want the games available right now or something.

Usually you can re-download at least. Actually I pulled some shenanigans to get myself Dash of Destruction (hey, I like it, even if it's super dumb) because I only got a 360 after that particular Doritos game had been delisted. I used my roommate's Live account to re-download the game and then, and this would only work for a free game I'm sure, didn't need his account anymore to play it once it was on my system.

I have R-Type as well from VC, but it's safely stored away on an SD card so I dunno about re-downloading, though I assume it would work the same way where if you already bought it and etc. At least for now.

I guess you can say well if you didn't buy it at the time you're not missing out on anything important, and logically I see that. Emotionally it causes me great anxiety, though. I know I pass up a lot of things I often regret later.

And it's not like a physical copy, where that desirable game may appear on eBay, pawn shop, garage sale, or whatever, so you can get your hands on it later.

Yeah. I bought Suikoden II for an ungodly amount of money I'm almost embarrassed of, but at least doing that was an option.

I sort of know what you mean. The TG-16 version of R-Type was forever on my "one of these days" list of games to download, and now I guess I've missed the boat on that one, unless it comes out again on some other digital download service.
