This must have been before I found the podcast... what is this about Phil replaced by Sarah Chalke now?
(I ask mainly because coincidentally I just finished marathon-ing through the entirety of Scrubs over the past week and a half).
Pretty sure Phil was never in Roseanne.

the point being, individual battles were not a particularly big deal outside of being a drain on your resources, and the dungeon in it's entirely was the challenge. (Dragon Quest is still the master of this formula)
These things were always frustrating to the player, but the thing is that as designers worked on ways to fix them, we were left with games that were less frustrating, but we lost that resource management element that was part of the game, and in it's place, we've placed a greater emphasis on individual battles. Except that grinding was always kind of a chore, so as battles got more involved, they also got easier. So the battle systems were made more technical, so that you needed to really know what you were doing, but if you did, then fights were still not that hard. Then, to adjust for the increased complexity, the penalty for failure was reduced.
The culmination of all this is Final Fantasy 13, a game where you're fully restored after every battle and you can immediately retry any battle and can never get lost or pulled off the main path, and on the flip side, every battle is a clusterfuck where every split second counts and you need to juggle several systems, variables, and party builds in real time and crushing death can potentially come at any moment.
Meanwhile, Dragon Quest refined it's traditional systems to the point where DQ9 might as well be digital crack. But it's not in HD, so naturally, it didn't find an audience in the West.
That's my little history extrapolation, anyway. If you guys want to read a VERY in-depth retrospective, I'd highly recommend The Rise and Fall of Final Fantasy by Pat R. Just clear some time off your calendar before you start.
Sounds like we're catering to a very niche market.
I think you mean a nitch market.

I also meant to post it in the Walking Dead thread, but there was apparently an issue with the PS3 version early (since patched) that screwed up when it came to save files. I wonder if that was his problem...

So, that link also says that, in America, we say it so it rhymes with "rich." I think this case is closed.
I'm not in America.

You might want to research better. It has three pronunciations according to your source, which is a decidedly American dictionary.Yup. Niche rhymes with rich.
