The game has 200 different warriors you can recruit, and each one has its own Pokemon affinity. The better a warrior and a Pokemon match up, the higher you can level up their "link", which is how all leveling is done in the game. So with the perfect match you can level all the way up to 100% link, while a mediocre match may only be able to go up to 70%. A big part of the game is recruiting warriors, and then trying to find the ideal Pokemon for them. Each warrior has a unique ability that they can trigger once per battle (such as a temporary stat boost, or healing all Pokemon). Also, each Pokemon has a unique latent ability (such as having increased defense while on a certain terrain, or hitting nearby enemies for minor damage once per turn
I'm really enjoying the game so far. It really has that Pokemon "Catch 'em All" feel when it comes to recruiting all of the warriors, and finding the ideal Pokemon for them. The SRPG gameplay is a bit too simple, but that makes it accessible for Pokemon fans that have never played a game in the genre before.

I took it to work to play on my lunch break one day, and soon realized that I really should have left it at home.

It's awfully tempting to pick up a copy...

Part of it is that it still has those Pokemon touchstones, so you kind of know what's weak against what, and the emphasis is much more on building the right team for the job than it is on a particularly complex battle system. The big distinction in going with an isometric map for combat is that it's easier to visualize and keep track of the 6 on 6 battles than it would be with the standard Pokemon battle system.
