well here's the deal, I attempted to transcribe the dialog to reveal a secondary meaning to each line.

We have three characters in the trailer, Cambell, Snake, Meryl and Liquid. Cambell and Meryl are representative of sony, Snake is Kojima, and Liquid is Microsoft.


Lets examine the dialog, the transcription is in bold [note: probune is too lazy to bold it all, figure it out yourself lol]

trailer said:

CAMBELL (sony): "This order isn't a mission from Washington"= Redman Washington? Microsoft?

SNAKE (kojima): "Why me"= why Kojima and his game?

CAMBELL (sony): "because of the military might of the pmc's, and the effect they have on the economy"= because Microsoft's 360fanbase is getting bigger, and their effecting PS3 sales

CAMBELL (sony): "war is to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th... the pillar that supports the global economy"= the ps3 is to this generation what the ps2 was to the last generation... the pillar that supports Sony.

CAMBELL (sony):"the global community is concerned... but their all too afraid of the war economy collapsing to do anything about it" = Sony's fanbase is concerned about the ps3, but their afraid to do anything about it; their afraid to spend $500-$600 on a console that may fail

SNAKE (kojima): "sounds pretty self serving to me"= ps3 fans can make the ps3 a success if they buy a ps3, if not, it will fail.

CAMBELL (sony): "but I, for one, don't intend to simply stand by and watch it happen. This isn't justice"= Sony is not going to let the ps3 loose; they worked too hard to let it die.

CAMBELL (sony): "it's a covert operation, a hired hit" = MGS4 is a hired hit on Microsoft

CAMBELL (sony): "will you do this for me? Will you terminate liquid?"= will you defeat Microsoft?

LIQUID (Microsoft): "activated it"- kojima production logo comes on screen

MERYL (sony): "Liquids goal is to seize control of the SOP" = Microsoft’s goal is to seize control of the market

MERYL (sony):" to do that, he needs to analyze the nanomachines' structure and find out how they communicate with one another. The nanomachines' currently in use by military's and PMC's are third generation, but their design is derived of that of first generation" =Microsoft must analyze the PS3 and its fanbase, and see how they are cohesive. Microsoft must attract playstation owners to the 360 buy obtaining all of sony's exclusives (JRPG's on 360 anyone?). The ps3 is third generation but the fan base is derived from first generation PS1 days, so MS must persuade them.

SNAKE (kojima): "first generation?"

SNAKE (kojima): "so they've finally achieved real time battle control"= Microsoft finally getting market share

CAMBELL (sony): "he's taken control of this immense army, and now he's prepared to unleash an insurrection" = Microsoft is preparing the halo army? And their holiday insurrection

SNAKE (kojima): "you want liquid dead?" = MS dead

CAMBELL (sony): "he must be stopped before it’s too late"

MERYL (sony): "listen to me snake. We're ready to strike liquid at any time."

SNAKE (kojima): "you’re planning to take him by force? That’s crazy. Look things aren’t that simple" = Konami wants the game to sell, and on the 360 they will make a lot of money…

MERYL (sony): "your cause is our cause now" =Kojima's cause is sony's now.

MERYL (sony): "you don't have to do this"

SNAKE (kojima): "I'm no hero, never was… Just an old killer...hired to do some wet work"

MGS4 exclusive for the PS3.

there are probably many errors with my transcription but it does seem almost plausible considering the second half of the trailer was basically homosexual erotica between vamp and raiden.

All the stuff about Shadow Moses and Foxdie are definitely spoken by Naomi Hunter. If you listen close you can hear the difference in their voices.

I've only watched it once and I was just lookin at the graphics, I wasn't really paying attention to the voice acting. When I watch it again I'll prolly be able to tell the difference.

I don't think it's that strange to imagine the trailer refers to the console war. Previous trailers (MGS3 trailer, first MGS4 teaser) have referenced lots of big general things in games, like GTA and splinter cell. They've also referred to previous games in the series, in the games themselves in stranger than usual ways.

Maybe Shane is reaching, but I do think Kojima does a lot more meta-commentary than most devs, so I'm not going to call him an asshole for thinking about it.

The title was more of a joke than anything, since the idiocy is really coming from the neogaf poster and not shane. There might be a few lines with slight double meanings but the whole trailer is not an allegory for the console wars.

What's the problem with a little creative interpretation of this esoteric game? Shane's a pretty good writer and know a metric assload about games. I don't see what the problem is?

Again it was meant as a joke, and when Shane explained what he meant on the next podcast it made sense. He basically had the same view I did, that there were a few lines that had double meanings. It did seem a little crazy when Shane said it originally - it made me remember when he talked about how much "meta commentary" there was in the "work of art" that's Metal Gear Solid 2. Sure, the game does interesting things but it is not a genius work of writing at all, MGS scripts are interesting but not ultimately that well written.
