About The Show

The Player One Podcast started in October 2006, when hosts Chris "CJ" Johnston and Greg Sewart had the absurd idea of recording the game discussions they had while playing on Xbox Live and turning them into a podcast.

At first, they questioned whether this new venture would last 10 episodes before stopping. Not wanting to spend money on gear, early episodes were recorded with SOCOM headsets and mics and edited with Apple's free GarageBand app. They roped in their friends to join as co-hosts.

Nearly 20 years and over 1,000 episodes later (and now with much better gear), the podcast is still going—after numerous third and fourth chairs, guests, live events, and more.

While primarily an audio podcast, the show livestreams its recordings to Twitch and YouTube using the Streamyard platform. You can support the show on Patreon, join a listener Discord server, or just enjoy the back-catalog of...so, so many episodes.

About the hosts

Chris "CJ" Johnston

CJ has been playing video games his entire life. He began his career as a video game journalist, first starting a "zine" at age 14, then being hired by the gaming magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly (back when those were a thing). He is personally responsible for the "mind-boggling effects" meme and the Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee April Fools joke that appeared in the magazine. After a stint as News Editor and as a member of the magazine's Review Crew, CJ flipped to the other side of the industry, working at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim indie games label and then joining Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Enhance (Tetris Effect: Connected) in 2021. Greg Sewart

Greg has been playing video games since first firing up his family's Atari 2600 in the early 1980s. By the '90s, he was launching fan sites on the World Wide Web, including Gaming Age Online, eventually landing a writing gig at Electronic Gaming Monthly, where he and CJ first worked together. From there, he moved into game development, working on everything from first-person shooters like Robotech: Invasion to sports games like Backyard Baseball to HTML5 web games for pre-schoolers. Today, he channels his unholy love of everything '90s (especially the Sega Genesis) through podcasts and YouTube videos. Follow Greg on BlueSky
